Since my early childhood I have been fascinated by Mesopotamia and its rich history. As a young boy I could spend hours in the library, searching for books about the land between the rivers. Cities such as Ur, Uruk and Eridu captured my imagination, as did the ancient mythologies that originated there. The story of Gilgamesh and his companion Enkidu in particular always managed to grip me, a mythical epic about friendship, power, mortality and the search for immortality that continues to resonate to this day.
Now that the land of the Two Rivers is once again in the news, albeit for far less uplifting reasons, such as the alarming amount of lead found in the air, I, Voidhanger Records has chosen to return to the cultural and mythological heritage of this region. The label presents an especially ambitious project in which four bands join forces to translate the Epic of Gilgamesh into music.
Four very different acts take part in this project: Australia’s Midnight Odyssey, Finland’s Serpent Ascending, Birmingham (UK) based Swords of Dis, and finally Belgium’s Ôros Kaù. Together they have immersed themselves in the oldest known literary epic in the world and attempted to translate this monument of human civilization into the language of Metal.
The result is a fascinating musical interpretation that explores various styles within the extreme spectrum. From vast, cosmic Atmospheric Black Metal to more experimental and Avant-Garde oriented Black Metal, each band gives its own interpretation of these ancient stories. The journey of Gilgamesh, his friendship with Enkidu, the confrontation with the gods and the search for eternal life are brought to life in a new way.
Musically the album goes in many different directions. At times you are fully immersed in Black Metal, while at other moments you are suddenly pulled back into the 1980s, hearing echoes of Into the Pandemonium by Celtic Frost with all its bizarre ornaments and eccentric touches. Still, traditional Black Metal remains the central thread running through the entire project.
Would the ancient Sumerians have been impressed by this project? Perhaps in some ways. Most likely, however, they would have been utterly terrified , probably filling their trousers, assuming such garments even existed back then, because I imagine that this ancient people might not have appreciated Black Metal very much. Fortunately, we do, and this release, with all its variation and its strong narrative, personally appealed to me a great deal.
The whole project has been pressed not on one but on two vinyl records and comes with a 12-page booklet containing information about the bands as well as the story itself.

Sinds mijn vroege jeugd ben ik gefascineerd door Mesopotamië en zijn rijke geschiedenis. Als kleine jongen kon ik al uren in de bibliotheek doorbrengen, op zoek naar boeken over het Tweestromenland. Steden als Ur, Uruk en Eridu spraken enorm tot mijn verbeelding, net als de oude mythologieën die daar hun oorsprong vonden. Vooral het verhaal van Gilgamesh en zijn metgezel Enkidu wist me telkens opnieuw te grijpen, een mythisch epos over vriendschap, macht, sterfelijkheid en de zoektocht naar onsterfelijkheid, dat nog steeds tot de verbeelding spreekt.
Nu het Tweestromenland opnieuw in het nieuws komt, zij het om minder verheffende redenen zoals de alarmerende hoeveelheid lood in de lucht, grijpt I,Voidhanger Records terug naar de culturele en mythologische erfenis van deze regio. Het label presenteert een bijzonder ambitieus project waarbij vier bands de handen ineenslaan om het Epos van Gilgamesh muzikaal te vertalen.
Aan dit project nemen vier uiteenlopende acts deel: het Australische Midnight Odyssey, het Finse Serpent Ascending, Swords of Dis uit Birmingham in Engeland en tenslotte het Belgische Ôros Kaù. Samen hebben zij zich gebogen over het oudste bekende literaire epos ter wereld en geprobeerd dit monument uit de menselijke beschavingsgeschiedenis te vertalen naar de taal van Metal.
Het resultaat is een fascinerende muzikale interpretatie die verschillende stijlen binnen het extreme spectrum verkent. Van uitgestrekte, kosmische Atmospheric Black Metal tot meer experimentele en Avant-Garde georiënteerde Black Metal: elke band geeft een eigen invulling aan de eeuwenoude verhalen. Zo wordt de reis van Gilgamesh, zijn vriendschap met Enkidu, de confrontatie met de goden en de zoektocht naar eeuwig leven op een nieuwe manier tot leven gewekt.
Muzikaal gaat het alle kanten op, soms zit je vol in de Black Metal, soms wordt je even de jaren 80 ingerukt en hoor je bijna Into the Pandemonium van Celtic Frost met zal zijn bizarre tierlantijntjes toch blijft de “normale” Black Metal de rode lijn.
Zouden de oude Sumeriërs onder de indruk zijn geweest van dit project, op sommige vlakken misschien, wat ze hoogstwaarschijnlijk vooral zouden hebben gedaan is hun broek, mocht men die toen al hebben gehad, vol gepoept want ik kan me indenken dat dit oervolk Black Metal niet kon appreciëren. Nou, gelukkig wij wel en deze release met al zijn afwisseling en voor verhaal kon mij persoonlijk zeer bekoren.
Dit alles werd geperst op niet één maar twee plakken vinyl en voorzien van een 12 pagina’s tellend boekwerk met de info van de bands en het verhaal.
