Review: Spectr3 – A Procession of the Dead

English:

A bell ringing in the distance, burning candles and a procession of black-robed figures slowly moving through the mist. Those who witness the procession may eventually find themselves joining the dead. With this ancient image of a nocturnal procession of souls, SPECTR3 has found a fitting world for A Procession of the Dead: superstition, ghosts, witchcraft and stories in which the boundary between the living and the dead never seems entirely closed.

SPECTR3 hails from Barcelona and by now belongs to the older active names within the Iberian Black Metal underground. The band’s origins date back to 2004, when SPECTR3 emerged from the remains of Argar. Periods of activity and silence followed, leaving behind a remarkably small discography. A Procession of the Dead is only their second full-length album, arriving eight years after A Grim Menace from Beyond.

Across ten tracks and just over forty minutes, the band builds its spectral world. Torax opens without an elaborate introduction and immediately makes clear that SPECTR3 has planted its roots firmly in the Black Metal of the 1990s. The production is raw yet clear enough to distinguish the different layers, while synthesizers are mainly used to cast shadows around the riffs rather than overwhelm the music.

With Phantom Drummer of Tedworth, the band immediately ventures into the realm of old ghost stories. The tale of the mysterious drummer from seventeenth-century England fits perfectly with the way SPECTR3 shapes its music. The guitars are sharp, but beneath the aggression there is a constant sense of unease. It feels as though something is always lurking behind the music without ever fully revealing itself.

The title track strengthens that impression. A Procession of the Dead revolves around a macabre procession of wandering souls, an omen of death and disaster. Musically, SPECTR3 avoids unnecessary complexity. Its strength lies in repetition and riffs that linger long enough for their menace to take hold. Lilith Necrobitch lays her raw vocals over the top without allowing them to dominate the rest of the sound.

That supernatural character runs throughout the album. A Forest in Hell, Blood Rituals in the House of the Dead and The Restless Spirit of the Screaming Woods already sound as though their titles were pulled from the yellowed pages of some forgotten volume on witchcraft and apparitions. The short instrumental pieces Valse Spectrorum and, later, Into the Mausoleum provide brief interruptions without ever completely breaking the atmosphere.

One of the strongest aspects of A Procession of the Dead is SPECTR3’s understanding that old-school Black Metal does not automatically mean trying to recreate an album from 1994. The influence of that period is unmistakable, but the band mainly uses it as a foundation. Synthesizers, changes in tempo and the occasionally almost theatrical atmosphere give the material enough character to prevent it from relying entirely on nostalgia.

With Saducismus Triumphatus, the historical fascination becomes even more explicit. The title refers to Joseph Glanvill’s notorious seventeenth-century work concerning witchcraft, spirits and supernatural phenomena. It fits perfectly within an album where such stories are not merely inspiration for individual lyrics but help define the atmosphere of the entire record.

After the brief Into the Mausoleum, Goddesses of Vengeance closes the album. The focus shifts towards the Graeae and ancient mythology, yet musically SPECTR3 remains within the same shadowy world. It is a strong conclusion that makes no attempt to end the album with some grandiose gesture. The door of the mausoleum simply closes again.

A Procession of the Dead is therefore an album whose strength does not come from innovation, but from conviction. SPECTR3 knows the language of old Black Metal extremely well, but more importantly, the band understands how to use that language to create a world of its own: one of bells ringing in the night, mist between the trees, ancient books and figures you think you glimpse from the corner of your eye.

And should you ever encounter a procession of silent figures carrying candles along the way, it is probably best not to join them. According to SPECTR3, these things rarely end well.

Nederlands:

A Procession of the Dead is pas de tweede volledige langspeler en volgt acht jaar na A Grim Menace from Beyond.
