Mörk, best known for his work with Svartsyn, Watain (live) and Malign, has gone solo under the name Shatterer. To mark the occasion, Dutch label Nomad Snakepit is releasing the debut EP on tape, strictly limited to 100 copies.
When we speak of Yonas Lindskog, we are talking about a true veteran of the genre – someone who has been active for over thirty years and has contributed greatly to the underground. It should come as no surprise, then, that this Fire EP takes us straight back to the early ’90s, when the so-called Second Wave of Black Metal was still in its infancy.
In just over fifteen minutes, spread across three tracks, Shatterer demonstrates exactly how this style is meant to be executed: raw, Scandinavian, epic, dramatic – these are but a few of the words that come to mind. The anguished, wailing vocals tie everything together, immersing the listener completely in a suffocating yet captivating atmosphere.
Subtle synth layers bolster the heavy riffs and doom-laden rhythms of Fire of Satan’s Love, while Mörk passionately delivers what feels like a near-romantic hymn to the Devil. It plays like an infernal lullaby, preparing the listener for a descent into the underworld.
The closer, Burning All, raises the stakes even further: the fire of Satan’s love has now consumed everything. The tempo is somewhat faster here, though shifts in pace and intensity keep the song dynamic and compelling throughout.
Shatterer leaves you craving more. As a debut, this is an impressive statement and a worthy addition to any black metal collection. All eyes are now on what Yonas Lindskog has in store for us next.
