The Ægishjálmur (Helm of Awe) — a symbol said to grant its bearer courage and guide them through life. We still see it appear in various places today, whether as a tattoo, a mystical emblem, or on a metal album cover.
Polish musician Marek Świerczyński started Muras in 2023 and has since churned out no less than 9 singles, 2 EPs, and an album. As far as I know, he hasn’t released anything physically yet, with everything being spread mainly via the digital highway — this EP included.
We’re treated to five tracks with a total running time of 28 minutes. Five songs that can best be described as something between Darkthrone’s “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” and “Transilvanian Hunger”. Norwegian-sounding Black Metal with the necessary hiss and fuzz — straight out of 1992.
Lyrically, it’s mostly in Polish, with the occasional line of Icelandic thrown in. After a quick translation, it’s clear he’s mostly on a pagan path — which makes perfect sense when you see the cover art and the title. A bit in the vein of Graveland.
Despite the artwork suggesting this might be a tape release, it’s actually digital-only — which is a bit of a shame. At the moment, I don’t have enough info to confirm whether Ægishjálmurwill eventually get a physical version, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
