Review: Paara – Laulut tulen ja jään

English:

Eight years after Riitti, Finland’s Paara return with Laulut tulen ja jään. Their third full-length arrives through Dusktone, with a title that roughly translates as ‘Songs of Fire and Ice’. As on their previous releases, the lyrics are entirely in Finnish and draw on the mythology and darker folk tales of their homeland.

Founded in 2011 by Helmouth and Zvartus, the band brings together musicians with plenty of experience. Hahtezan is Natalie Koskinen of Shape of Despair and The Abbey, Helmouth previously sang with Church of the Dead and Ghoul Patrol, while drummer Waara also plays in Lost in Grey and Anima Hereticae, among others.

At its core, this is a black metal record, with folk, pagan and doom elements steering the songs in different directions. Alongside the aggression, there is room for melancholic melodies, acoustic guitars, clean vocals and choral passages. The shifts between quiet moments and intense outbursts are central to the band’s approach. This gives the album plenty of variety, although it can also leave you wondering exactly where Paara are heading.

That is my main reservation. There is nothing wrong with combining styles, but they need to work together within the songs. That does not always happen here. At times, the different elements seem to sit alongside one another, making the music somewhat difficult to follow. The move from one idea to the next does not always feel as natural as it should. Greater cohesion would help keep the focus on each composition as a whole.

‘Kirveenkantaja’, ‘Lapsi päivännäkemätön’ and ‘Pohjolan’ all exceed ten minutes. Together, they account for a substantial part of an album running just over 53 minutes. At these lengths, structure becomes particularly important: as a listener, you want the song to carry you along, even when its pace or mood changes. This is where some further work would help. Paara need not abandon their broad approach, but the different influences could be woven together more effectively.

Zvartus and Helmouth handled production, with Saku Moilanen sharing mixing duties and taking care of the mastering. The artwork comes from David Thiérrée, who also created the cover for Riitti.

Vinyl buyers should be aware of a different tracklist. The CD and digital editions contain nine tracks, while the LP has six. ‘Vuorten varjoista’, ‘Pimeyteen’ and closing track ‘Jää’ are absent from the vinyl edition. Depending on your chosen format, you therefore get a different version of the album.

Laulut tulen ja jään offers plenty of variety and shows just how much Paara want to put into their music. For me, it does not quite come together yet. There is plenty of potential in this combination of styles, but a clearer sense of direction within the songs would make the album more convincing as a whole.

Nederlands:
