Review: Cult of the Moon – Lunar Eclipse

English:

With *Lunar Eclipse*, Cult of the Moon releases its first full-length album. The band plays melodic black metal built around raw vocals, powerful drums and melodic guitar work. The musicianship is solid throughout, and the guitar work is particularly impressive. Still, the band does not manage to make an impact at every turn.

The album opens with the title track, where calm guitars gradually give way to heavier riffs and melodic leads. ‘Sun Offering’ builds on this combination, ending with a surprising piano passage. With ‘Sheol’, the band then reveals a heavier side. The fast drums and menacing riffs make this one of the album’s stronger tracks.

‘Curse’ keeps things moving, while ‘Under the Wings of Divine Presence’ provides some welcome variation with its cinematic intro and impressive guitar solo. The guitar work is one of Cult of the Moon’s greatest strengths. The musicians clearly know their instruments and regularly deliver strong melodies that make for some memorable moments.

‘Beneath My Leaves’ is another highlight, bringing melody and aggression together effectively. ‘Flames of Retribution’ also delivers with its faster pace and direct approach. The band then opts for a more symphonic direction on ‘The Dawn That Never Comes’, incorporating keyboards and orchestral elements. Closing track ‘Lonely God’ introduces yet another atmosphere, with calm melodies and varied guitar work.

Although the quality of the musicianship is beyond question, I would have liked the compositions to leave a stronger overall impression. Fortunately, Cult of the Moon offers enough strong passages and effective musical twists to keep drawing the listener back in.

Lunar Eclipse is a solid debut that stands out primarily for its technical guitar work and melodic approach. There is still room for improvement in the songwriting, but there is enough here to make Cult of the Moon a band worth keeping an eye on.
