Review: Mists – Summoning Eternity

Engels:

With musicians from bands such as Oerheks, Häxenzijrkell, Silver Knife and Wolvennest, Belgian-American MISTS have a line-up that hardly needs any introduction within the Black Metal underground. The trio consists of H., C.V.B. and S.G., who have joined forces for a project centred around atmospheric Black Metal. On 4 November, Amor Fati Productions will release their debut album Summoning Eternity, consisting of just two compositions with a combined running time of almost 39 minutes. That is an ambitious choice, but MISTS rises to the challenge with conviction.

The album opens with Through Eternal Graves, which, at almost 22 minutes, immediately accounts for the greater part of the first half of the record. MISTS opts for a dark, misty approach in which slowly developing passages and aggressive outbursts alternate naturally. The guitars lay down a dense carpet of distorted sounds, from which melodies gradually emerge. The composition’s length works in the band’s favour: the music is given ample room to unfold and build a spellbinding sense of tension.

The influence of traditional Black Metal remains unmistakable. Fierce tremolo riffs, raw vocals and powerful drums form the foundation, but MISTS does not use these elements solely to generate aggression. The music also searches for melancholy, menace and an almost hypnotic intensity. Particularly when the band increases the speed and force, it becomes clear how well these musicians command their instruments. The guitars form a massive wall of sound, while the melodies provide enough structure to reveal new details even after several listens.

The build-up of tension is one of the strengths of Through Eternal Graves. MISTS understands that a song lasting almost 22 minutes does not need to operate at full force throughout. The quieter passages do not feel like interruptions, but rather like necessary moments of reflection that give the subsequent eruptions even greater impact. When the band finally unleashes its full power, it sounds not only forceful, but also earned. The composition remains in constant motion without losing its atmospheric character.

The second track, Carved Miseries of Ancient Times, lasts almost seventeen minutes and continues along the same musical path. Darkness, dragging passages and melodic guitar lines remain central here, but the composition also has a slightly more direct impact. The rhythm section provides sufficient movement, while the guitars shift effortlessly between ominous repetition, raw aggression and more pronounced melodies. The song feels like a worthy companion to the opener and confirms that MISTS is not dependent on a single successful composition.

What makes MISTS particularly interesting is the combination of a raw musical foundation and a strongly atmospheric approach. The band does not opt for a modern, clinically polished production, but for a sound in which the instruments come together to form an oppressive and organic whole. The production allows the music to breathe without diminishing its intensity. During the heaviest passages in particular, the raw vocals, massive guitars and powerful drums come fully into their own.

The thematic content closely complements this musical approach. Graves, forgotten crypts and the transience of existence form the imagery with which MISTS shapes its world. The artwork by Blaeks reinforces this dark aesthetic. Although these subjects are familiar within Black Metal, the band translates them into music with conviction. The record never feels like a casual exercise in atmosphere; its darkness carries weight and is made genuinely tangible through the compositions.

The presence of experienced musicians creates certain expectations, but Summoning Eternity also manages to fulfil them. Especially with a record consisting of only two lengthy compositions, the musical ideas need to be strong enough to hold the listener’s attention for almost forty minutes. MISTS succeeds remarkably well in this regard. The songs never feel stretched out, instead developing with sufficient variation and dynamics. The band takes its time without losing the listener along the way.

As a result, Summoning Eternity is much more than a solid debut. MISTS demonstrates craftsmanship, a keen ear for sound and a convincing affinity with the darker and more hypnotic side of Black Metal. The band succeeds in evoking a believable world, combining atmospheric passages with moments of pure, unrestrained aggression. The compositions are long, but their length never becomes a problem. On the contrary, it is precisely this space that allows MISTS to fully develop its ideas.

Summoning Eternity is a remarkably strong debut album that reveals just how much potential MISTS possesses. The record is dark, immersive and intense, yet melodic enough to remain compelling with repeated listens. Its combination of rawness, atmosphere and convincing songwriting makes it a release that fans of atmospheric Black Metal should not overlook. MISTS does not cautiously make its entrance here; it makes an immediate and very strong impression.

Nederlands:

MISTS slaagt daar opvallend goed in.
