The German duo Haemalharia consists of Hekla on drums and vocals and C.G. on guitar and bass. With Vast Roar Okkulus, the band delivers its first full-length album, offering ten tracks and just over thirty-six minutes of music. Three short untitled interludes cut the album into sections, while the remaining tracks move between raw black metal, death metal and war metal, all wrapped in a strange cosmic and occult atmosphere.
The production is raw, but never muddy. The guitars scrape and cut, the drums hit hard through the mix and the bass remains surprisingly present. Even during the most chaotic passages, enough detail survives to keep everything from collapsing into noise. That is no unnecessary luxury, because Haemalharia seems to take great pleasure in stacking riffs and rhythmic shifts on top of one another.
The songs refuse to behave neatly. Riffs suddenly twist into something else, tempo changes can hit almost violently and passages that seem to be settling into a pattern are abruptly broken open by a new acceleration or a completely different movement. It gives Vast Roar Okkulus a nervous tension that remains present almost throughout the entire album.
Hekla’s vocals reinforce that feeling. His voice sounds hoarse, agitated and at times almost hysterical, yet it remains controlled enough within the mix to leave space for the instruments. In the faster sections, vocals, drums and guitars merge into a suffocating assault, while the slower moments become more threatening rather than simply easing off.
The interludes work surprisingly well in this context. They do not really function as moments of rest, but rather as short transmissions from somewhere else. Strange sounds and atmospheric fragments briefly pull the listener away from the musical attack before the next track strikes again. This gives the album more cohesion and strengthens its cosmic character beyond what the song titles alone already suggest.
And those titles are almost a story in themselves. VÆNGRAUDAZ // Egregoik Extasy, NUBIALIENUS // Extraterrestrial Refugees and TYPHOKRISIS // Eso/Exo-Idiocy sound as if someone fed an occult dictionary through a broken satellite. That may sound absurd, but it fits the music surprisingly well: distorted, elusive and deliberately alienating.
At times, there is the brute directness of war metal, but Haemalharia never keeps things simple enough to fully settle into that style. Other passages lean more towards raw black metal or more dissonant death metal. The band seems far more interested in what happens when those styles are pushed against each other until the seams start to tear.
That also means Vast Roar Okkulus is not an easy album. Some transitions are downright clumsy and not every idea gets enough time to fully land before the next one takes over. But that restlessness is also part of the album’s character. This does not sound like music that was ever meant to be polished smooth.
At just over thirty-six minutes, Haemalharia also gets the length exactly right. Any longer and this amount of chaos could easily have become exhausting. As it stands, the album remains compact, aggressive and unpredictable enough to hold your attention.
Vast Roar Okkulus is therefore a strong and striking debut. Not everything hits equally hard, but when Haemalharia brings its best riffs, strange atmosphere and brutal rhythms together, something genuinely addictive emerges. This is not an album that politely asks for another listen; it drags you back in to discover what you missed the first time.

Nederlands:
80/100
