There is something unhealthy hanging over the streets of Clermont-Ferrand. A city surrounded by a dramatic volcanic landscape, with the dominant Puy de Dôme rising above it like an ancient guardian watching over the city below. Yet there is no mist slowly creeping through ancient forests here, no romantic visions of abandoned castles, but concrete, filth, nocturnal streets and the suffocating atmosphere of a city that seems to be slowly rotting away. GLAISEMORT aptly calls it Urban Rot Worship, and on Demo II that description takes on a rather literal form.
GLAISEMORT is a young French project from Clermont-Ferrand that has only been active since 2026. The first demo appeared earlier this year, and barely half a year later Demo II is already upon us. The approach is clearly DIY, and you can hear it. There is little interest here in polished production or smoothing away the rough edges.
The guitars are raw and abrasive, at times almost merging into one massive wall of distortion. Behind them, programmed drums keep everything on track, while noise, electronics and dark ambient elements constantly seep through the music. Not as decoration, but as an essential part of its oppressive urban atmosphere.
This is what makes GLAISEMORT more interesting than yet another band simply trying to recreate an old Scandinavian demo. The foundation is unmistakably raw Black Metal, but Demo II has its own grim and filthy identity. It sounds less like something recorded deep within a forest and more like something created in a damp basement beneath a decaying apartment block.
Beautiful is probably the wrong word here. Demo II sounds filthy, claustrophobic and deliberately unfinished. That is exactly where its charm lies. GLAISEMORT makes no attempt to make the music sound bigger than it actually is. This is underground music that seems completely at home in the underground.
Two demos within a single year is also quite productive. If GLAISEMORT continues to develop this decaying urban atmosphere without losing its raw spontaneity, this is definitely a project worth keeping an eye on.

Er hangt iets ongezonds boven de straten van Clermont-Ferrand. Een stad omringd door een indrukwekkend vulkaanlandschap, met de dominante Puy de Dôme die als een eeuwenoude bewaker boven de stad uittorent. Toch vinden we hier geen mist die langzaam tussen eeuwenoude bossen kruipt en geen romantische beelden van verlaten kastelen, maar beton, vuil, nachtelijke straten en de verstikkende sfeer van een stad die langzaam lijkt weg te rotten. GLAISEMORT noemt het zelf treffend Urban Rot Worship, en op Demo II krijgt die omschrijving behoorlijk letterlijk vorm.

Daarachter houden de geprogrammeerde drums het geheel op de rails, terwijl noise, elektronica en donkere ambient-elementen voortdurend door de muziek heen sijpelen. Niet als versiering, maar als essentieel onderdeel van die bedompte, stedelijke atmosfeer.
Dat maakt GLAISEMORT interessanter dan de zoveelste band die simpelweg probeert een oude Scandinavische demo na te bootsen. De basis is onmiskenbaar rauwe Black Metal, maar Demo II heeft een eigen, grauwe en smerige identiteit. Alsof de muziek niet ergens diep in een bos is opgenomen, maar in een vochtige kelder onder een vervallen flatgebouw.
Mooi is hier eigenlijk het verkeerde woord. Demo II klinkt smerig, claustrofobisch en bewust onafgewerkt. Precies daarin zit de charme. GLAISEMORT probeert zijn muziek niet groter te laten klinken dan ze is. Dit is undergroundmuziek die zich volledig thuis lijkt te voelen in de underground.
Twee demo’s binnen één jaar is bovendien behoorlijk productief. Als GLAISEMORT deze stedelijke, rottende sfeer verder weet uit te bouwen zonder de rauwe spontaniteit kwijt te raken, is dit absoluut een project om in de gaten te houden.
