Noise, percussion and traditional Indian sounds collide almost immediately on Dhrupad Anutpada: Apophatic Ragas of Non-Origination. Somewhere inside that dense mass, Black and Death Metal riffs fight their way through, but Nirriti seems far less interested in keeping everything neatly separated than in dragging all these elements into the same ritual. The result initially feels overwhelming, yet gradually a sense of structure begins to emerge from the chaos.
What makes Nirriti particularly interesting is that the traditional Indian elements are not simply added as exotic decoration. They are genuinely woven into the music and, together with the repetitive rhythms, become an essential part of its atmosphere. As a result, the music develops a strongly ritualistic character that clearly sets it apart from a more conventional Black/Death Metal approach.
Despite the overwhelming amount of noise, there is something remarkably trance-like about the album. Riffs, percussion and traditional sounds are repeated for extended periods, slowly developing a hypnotic effect. Where the music initially comes across as chaotic and overwhelming, after a while it begins to feel as though you have somehow entered a ceremony. The chaos never disappears; instead, it becomes part of the ritual.
This also makes Dhrupad Anutpada an album you have to surrender yourself to. Anyone trying to isolate individual riffs or instruments from the enormous wall of sound may quickly become frustrated. Nirriti is far more concerned with the complete experience: distortion, drums, voices, noise and traditional instrumentation merge into one dense and constantly shifting whole.
At almost 44 minutes, this is certainly not an easy listening experience. The intensity remains high, and Nirriti offers very few moments in which you can escape from the wall of sound. At the same time, that uncompromising approach is an important part of its appeal. This is not an album designed to make the listener comfortable.
With Dhrupad Anutpada, Nirriti has created a distinctive combination of extreme Metal, noise and traditional Indian music. Chaotic, hypnotic and at times downright suffocating, but above all impressive in the way these elements eventually merge into something that feels more like a dark ritual than a conventional Metal album.

Ergens binnen die dichte massa proberen Black en Death Metal-riffs zich een weg naar buiten te banen, maar Nirriti lijkt er weinig behoefte aan te hebben om alles netjes van elkaar te scheiden. Wat Nirriti interessant maakt, is dat de traditionele Indiase elementen niet simpelweg als exotische versiering aan de muziek zijn toegevoegd. Ze zijn daadwerkelijk verweven met het geheel en vormen samen met de repetitieve ritmes een belangrijk onderdeel van de sfeer. Hierdoor krijgt de muziek een sterk ritueel karakter dat duidelijk afwijkt van de gebruikelijke Black/Death Metal-benadering.
Ondanks de enorme hoeveelheid noise heeft de plaat namelijk iets opvallend tranceachtigs. Riffs, percussie en traditionele klanken worden langdurig herhaald en beginnen langzaam een hypnotiserend effect te krijgen. Waar de muziek aanvankelijk vooral chaotisch en overweldigend klinkt, ontstaat na verloop van tijd het gevoel dat je in een soort ceremonie bent terechtgekomen. De chaos verdwijnt niet, maar wordt onderdeel van het ritueel.
Dat maakt Dhrupad Anutpada ook een plaat waar je jezelf aan moet overgeven. Wie probeert afzonderlijke riffs of instrumenten uit de enorme geluidsmuur te halen, zal waarschijnlijk vrij snel afhaken. Nirriti draait veel meer om het totaalbeeld: distortion, drums, stemmen, noise en traditionele instrumentatie vloeien samen tot één dicht en voortdurend bewegend geheel.
Met bijna 44 minuten is dat bepaald geen lichte luisterervaring. De intensiteit blijft hoog en Nirriti biedt nauwelijks momenten waarop je even uit de geluidsmuur kunt ontsnappen. Tegelijkertijd is juist die compromisloze aanpak een belangrijk onderdeel van de aantrekkingskracht. Dit is geen plaat die probeert comfortabel te klinken.
Nirriti heeft met Dhrupad Anutpada een bijzonder eigen combinatie gevonden van extreme Metal, noise en traditionele Indiase muziek. Chaotisch, hypnotiserend en soms ronduit verstikkend, maar vooral sterk in de manier waarop al die elementen uiteindelijk samenkomen in iets dat meer aanvoelt als een duister ritueel dan als een conventioneel Metalalbum.
