Blood Prophecy leans heavily on dark atmosphere and massive riffing. The guitars are given plenty of room to carry the three tracks, while the keyboards remain subtly in the background, adding an extra layer of darkness without taking anything away from the strength of the riffs.
Interestingly, despite Charnel Spirit’s Australian origins, the music has a distinctly European character. The melodies, the way the atmosphere is built and especially the heavy, occasionally almost doom-like nature of the riffs feel far removed from the rawer and more aggressive side often associated with Australian Black Metal. In that respect, Blood Prophecy also feels very much like a typical Amor Fati release. Not because it simply copies other bands on the label, but because this combination of darkness, atmosphere and powerful riffing fits naturally within their catalogue.
Charnel Spirit also takes its time. The three tracks are given enough space to develop, and it is particularly during the slower passages that the weight of the music really comes through. Instead of constantly pushing forward, the band allows riffs to breathe and gradually build momentum. This gives the material a sense of depth that works particularly well within its darker, more restrained atmosphere.
This brings us to the strange thing about Blood Prophecy: just when the release has properly drawn you into its atmosphere, it is almost over. Three tracks and less than twenty minutes of music is remarkably brief. There is obviously nothing wrong with that for a demo, but Amor Fati has released Blood Prophecy not only on CD but also as a full 12”. With current vinyl prices, one might wonder how many people are still willing to buy a record containing only three tracks and barely twenty minutes of music.
And that is a shame, because musically Blood Prophecy definitely leaves you wanting more. Charnel Spirit lays down a strong foundation of atmospheric Black Metal and heavy riffing. A few additional tracks certainly would not have been an unnecessary luxury. As it stands, Blood Prophecy feels mainly like a strong first introduction that comes to an end just when you are ready to hear more.

Blood Prophecy leunt zwaar op donkere atmosfeer en massief riffwerk. De gitaren krijgen alle ruimte om de drie nummers te dragen, terwijl de toetsen subtiel op de achtergrond blijven en een extra donkere laag toevoegen zonder de kracht van de riffs in de weg te zitten.
Opvallend genoeg klinkt Charnel Spirit, ondanks de Australische herkomst, behoorlijk Europees. De melodieën, de manier waarop de sfeer wordt opgebouwd en vooral het zware, soms bijna doomachtige karakter van de riffs liggen ver verwijderd van de rauwere en agressievere kant waarmee Australische Black Metal vaak wordt geassocieerd. In dat opzicht voelt Blood Prophecy ook als een typische Amor Fati-release. Niet omdat het klakkeloos klinkt als andere bands op het label, maar omdat die combinatie van duisternis, atmosfeer en stevig riffwerk uitstekend binnen hun catalogus past.
Charnel Spirit neemt bovendien de tijd. De drie nummers krijgen voldoende ruimte om zich te ontwikkelen en vooral in de tragere passages komt het gewicht van de muziek goed naar voren. In plaats van voortdurend vooruit te stormen, krijgen de riffs de ruimte om te ademen en geleidelijk kracht op te bouwen. Hierdoor krijgt het materiaal een bepaalde diepte die bijzonder goed werkt binnen de donkere, ingetogen sfeer.
Daarmee komen we meteen bij het vreemde aan Blood Prophecy: wanneer de release je eenmaal in zijn sfeer heeft getrokken, is hij alweer bijna voorbij. Drie nummers en nog geen twintig minuten muziek is erg kort. Als demo is daar natuurlijk weinig mis mee, maar Amor Fati heeft Blood Prophecy naast CD ook als volledige 12” uitgebracht. Met de huidige vinylprijzen kun je je toch afvragen hoeveel mensen bereid zijn een plaat te kopen waarop slechts drie nummers en amper twintig minuten muziek staan.
En dat is jammer, want muzikaal smaakt Blood Prophecy juist naar meer. Charnel Spirit legt hier een stevige basis met atmosferische Black Metal en zwaar riffwerk. Een paar extra nummers waren dan ook zeker geen overbodige luxe geweest. Nu voelt Blood Prophecy vooral als een sterke eerste kennismaking die ophoudt op het moment dat je eigenlijk nog verder wilt luisteren.
