In 1994, Godblood released Flowers, one of the earliest, if not the first, Black Metal demos to emerge from Cyprus. More than three decades later, the Cypriots are still at it, and apparently growing older has done very little to make them more subtle. Their new EP is simply called Fuck The Skull. Four tracks, just over seventeen minutes, and a concept in which death and desire meet in a particularly unhealthy embrace.
Godblood themselves call it “necroerotic Black Metal”, a description that initially sounds like somebody invented another subgenre after a few drinks too many. Yet there is an actual idea behind Fuck The Skull. Thanatos and Eros — death and desire — are intertwined throughout the EP, with physicality, lust, decay and mortality constantly rubbing against one another.
The short Lust serves as the gateway before the title track properly tears things open. Anyone expecting an overdose of theatrical eroticism because of the concept will thankfully be disappointed. Godblood keep the musical foundation remarkably direct. The riffs possess that simple, sinister quality where atmosphere matters considerably more than technical decoration, while the production retains enough dirt beneath its fingernails without resorting to artificial basement aesthetics.
There is still something unmistakably present here from a band whose roots genuinely lie in the early nineties. Godblood do not need to reconstruct what underground Black Metal sounded like back then; they were actually part of it. That does not mean Fuck The Skull sounds like a forgotten demo that spent thirty years on a cassette in a damp cardboard box. The sound is fuller and more powerful, but the primitive mentality behind the music remains intact.
At over six minutes, Funeral Noir is the longest track and gives the music more room to unfold. The tempo is not constantly pushed forward, and precisely because of that, the morbid character of the EP gains additional weight. The guitars create an ominous backdrop while Deceased’s vocals spread across it like a grey layer of decay. This is perhaps where the combination of death, desire and deterioration works most effectively, without Godblood ever having to spell out the concept.
Blood Bible closes the EP without suddenly steering things in another direction. Again, the strength lies mainly in the simplicity of the material. Godblood do not pile dozens of riffs on top of one another, nor do they attempt to impress with technical acrobatics. Repetition, a filthy atmosphere and several well-placed changes of pace are more than enough to keep the track standing.
What is particularly striking is how little Fuck The Skull sounds like the work of a band trying to preserve its own past after more than thirty years. Godblood have a history stretching back to a period when Black Metal in Cyprus could barely be called a scene, but they do not use that history as an excuse to deliver a museum piece in 2026. The old mentality remains present while the material itself firmly exists in the here and now.
The production helps considerably. Dictator recorded most of the material and handled the mix at Temple of Flesh, while the drums were recorded in a studio genuinely called Sex Dungeon. On almost any other record that would be a completely irrelevant detail. On an EP called Fuck The Skull, built around the union of Eros and Thanatos, it somehow feels as though it could not have happened anywhere else.
At just over seventeen minutes, Fuck The Skull ends before its concept has any opportunity to exhaust itself. That is probably exactly the right length. Godblood present four compact chapters revolving around one clear idea without attempting to turn it into an hour-long philosophical treatise.
More than thirty years after Flowers, Godblood no longer need to convince anyone of their underground past. Far more important is that they are still capable of creating material that does not survive solely on that history. Fuck The Skull is primitive, morbid, filthy and, at times, strangely seductive.
“Necroerotic Black Metal”, then.
Apparently, we needed that subgenre after all.

Nederlands:
“Necroerotic Black Metal” dus.
Blijkbaar hadden we dat subgenre toch nodig.
