Sometimes a release slips through the cracks at our editorial office, causing an album to miss out on the attention it truly deserves. Unfortunately, that also happened with the impressive debut of Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne!. Still, it is hardly justifiable once you take a look at the names involved behind this record.
Let’s start with the line-up, because it is nothing short of remarkable. T. Skei (Manes, Manii) handles guitars and keyboards, while B. Kråbøl (Enevelde, Misotheist) takes his place behind the drum kit. The venomous screams are delivered by K. Rambech of Whoredom Rife, while E. Blix (Djevel, Vemod) provides the clean, almost sacred choir vocals.
With a line-up like this, you can proudly show up anywhere — even at your great-aunt’s birthday party — because a few jaws are bound to drop. After all, it is not every day that musicians from such renowned names within the Norwegian underground scene join forces for a project that radiates this much quality and experience from the very first notes.
Together, these gentlemen do exactly what you would expect from such a gathering of talent: delivering an exceptionally strong dose of Norwegian atmospheric Black Metal. And atmospheric it most certainly is. Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! feels as though you are being dragged into an occult mass deep within the dark Norwegian forests, where mist lingers between the trees and every composition radiates an almost ritualistic intensity.
The combination of icy riffs, haunting keyboards, and the interplay between manic screams and solemn choir vocals ensures that the album constantly evokes a suffocating, nearly sacred atmosphere. It is precisely this balance between aggression and mysticism that makes the release so convincing and allows Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! to distinguish itself effortlessly within the overcrowded Black Metal landscape.
The interaction between the clean, sacred vocal lines and the raw screams works particularly well. Especially during the moments when solemn church organs emerge, the album reaches an almost liturgical intensity that perfectly complements the occult nature of the music.
In terms of tempo, Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! largely resides within blastbeat territory, yet surprisingly the music never feels chaotic or exhausting. Quite the opposite, in fact: thanks to the strong atmospheric build-up and hypnotic melodies, the album feels more mesmerizing and strangely calming than outright aggressive.
In short, this is a highly successful album that is more than worth your time, inviting the listener to descend together with these men from Trondheim into the very depths of hell.

Soms glipt er op onze redactie wel eens een release door de mazen van het net, waardoor een album helaas niet meteen de aandacht krijgt die het verdient. Dat overkwam ons ook met het indrukwekkende debuut van Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! Toch is dat nauwelijks te verantwoorden wanneer je ziet welke namen er achter deze plaat schuilgaan.
Ik begin maar meteen met de line-up, want die liegt er bepaald niet om. T. Skei (Manes, Manii) neemt gitaren en keyboards voor zijn rekening, terwijl B. Kråbøl (Enevelde, Misotheist) achter het drumstel plaatsneemt. De venijnige screams worden verzorgd door K. Rambech van Whoredom Rife, terwijl E. Blix (Djevel, Vemod) de cleane, haast sacrale koorzang op zich neemt.
Met zo’n line-up kun je zonder schaamte thuiskomen — of verschijnen op de verjaardag van een oudtante — want daar zullen ongetwijfeld wat mondjes van openvallen. Het is immers niet elke dag dat muzikanten uit zulke gerenommeerde namen binnen de Noorse underground de krachten bundelen voor een project dat vanaf de eerste tonen zoveel kwaliteit en ervaring uitstraalt.
Samen doen deze heren eigenlijk precies wat je van zo’n gezelschap mag verwachten: een bijzonder sterke dosis Noorse atmosferische Black Metal afleveren. En sfeervol is het zonder enige twijfel. Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! voelt aan alsof je midden in een occulte mis wordt meegesleurd, diep de donkere Noorse wouden in, waar mistflarden tussen de bomen hangen en iedere compositie een bijna rituele intensiteit uitstraalt.
De combinatie van ijzige riffs, bezwerende keyboards en de afwisseling tussen maniakale screams en plechtige koorzang zorgt ervoor dat de plaat voortdurend een beklemmende, haast sacrale atmosfeer oproept. Het is precies die balans tussen agressie en mystiek die deze release zo overtuigend maakt en waarmee Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! zich moeiteloos weet te onderscheiden binnen het overvolle Black Metal-landschap.
Ook de wisselwerking tussen de cleane, sacrale zanglijnen en de rauwe screams werkt bijzonder sterk. Vooral op de momenten waarop daar nog plechtige kerkorgels aan worden toegevoegd, bereikt de plaat een haast liturgische intensiteit die perfect aansluit bij het occulte karakter van de muziek.
Qua tempo bevindt Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne! zich grotendeels in het blastbeat-gebied, maar opvallend genoeg voelt de muziek daardoor nergens chaotisch of vermoeiend aan. Integendeel zelfs: dankzij de sterke atmosferische opbouw en de hypnotiserende melodieën werkt het album eerder bezwerend en rustgevend dan agressief
Kortom evenzeer geslaagd album dat zeer de moeite waard is om te luisteren en samen met deze mannen uit Trondheim af te dalen naar de krochten van de hel.
