Machine-gun salvos thunder relentlessly across the devastated landscape, while in the distance the chilling whistle of incoming shells echoes through the air, followed by dull, earth-shattering explosions. Mud, smoke, and the penetrating smell of gunpowder fill the skies above the moonlike battlefield. It is February 21st, 1916: the beginning of the Battle of Verdun.
With a massive force of roughly 150,000 men, the Germans, mockingly referred to by the French as “the Huns” , launch their offensive against the heavily fortified French stronghold of Verdun. The objective is not merely military in nature; the German High Command intends to quite literally “bleed France dry” in an unprecedented war of attrition. The assault is supported by an overwhelming artillery barrage that wipes entire villages, forests, and trench systems off the map.
France responds with both panic and determination. Fresh troops are rushed to the front at all costs. Along the famous Voie Sacrée, endless columns of trucks move day and night toward Verdun, while even Parisian taxis are requisitioned to transport soldiers to the battlefield as quickly as possible. The message is clear: Verdun must not fall, ever. The fortress has become a national symbol of French honor and resistance.
What follows is a ten-month nightmare of endless assaults, mud-filled trenches, poison gas, artillery fire, and brutal hand-to-hand combat over mere hundreds of meters of shattered ground. Fortresses such as Douaumont and Vaux change hands multiple times, while hundreds of thousands of young men vanish into the inferno of steel and fire.
When the battle finally subsides in December 1916, nearly 350,000 soldiers are dead, with countless others mutilated or psychologically scarred. Vast stretches of land have been transformed into a desolate wasteland where almost no life can exist anymore. Yet France has endured. Verdun remains French, a bloody victory that would forever symbolize sacrifice, stubborn resilience, and the madness of the First World War.
This is only a brief summary of the opening track “Verdun” by the new French Black Metal band Hydre. Hydre is a brand-new French melodic Black Metal band that recently emerged with their first demo release.
Across four tracks, Hydre introduces us to their French-language Black Metal, and it is absolutely far from disappointing. The band effortlessly creates an atmosphere that feels both epic and suffocating, driven by strong melodies, raw vocals, and a pronounced historical focus.
The stirring “Le Pontife Écarlate” (“The Scarlet Pontiff”) and the crushing “Régicide” (“Regicide”) are equally compelling. Both tracks breathe the same dark and historical atmosphere found on “Verdun” and likewise appear to revolve around historical themes. In particular, the combination of aggressive riffs, melancholic melodies, and French lyrics gives Hydre a distinct identity within the melodic Black Metal genre.
There is also plenty of room for impressive guitar solos and rough, ominous bass lines that add extra depth and dynamism to the songs. That combination of melodic leads and robust rhythms ensures the music feels not only aggressive, but also immersive and layered.
This is genuinely great stuff. Now we can only hope for a physical release at some point, because so far there has been no news regarding one.

Met een enorme strijdmacht van ongeveer 150.000 man openen de Duitsers, door de Fransen smalend “de Hunnen” genoemd, hun offensief op de zwaar verdedigde Franse vestingstad Verdun. Wat volgt is een nachtmerrie van tien maanden vol eindeloze aanvallen, modderige loopgraven, gifgas, artillerievuur en man-tegen-mangevechten om enkele honderden meters verwoeste grond. Forten zoals Douaumont en Vaux wisselen meerdere keren van eigenaar, terwijl honderdduizenden jonge mannen verdwijnen in het inferno van staal en vuur.
Wanneer de strijd uiteindelijk in december 1916 wegebt, zijn bijna 350.000 soldaten gedood en nog veel meer verminkt of getraumatiseerd. Hele stukken land zijn veranderd in een troosteloze woestenij waarin nauwelijks nog leven mogelijk is. Toch heeft Frankrijk standgehouden. Dit is slechts een korte samenvatting van het openingsnummer “Verdun” van de nieuwe Franse Black Metalband Hydre. Hydre is een splinternieuwe Franse melodieuze Black Metalband die onlangs met hun eerste demo op de proppen kwam.
Met vier nummers laat Hydre ons kennismaken met hun Franstalige Black Metal, en dat stelt absoluut niet teleur. De band weet moeiteloos een sfeer neer te zetten die zowel episch als beklemmend aanvoelt, gedragen door sterke melodieën, rauwe vocalen en een uitgesproken historische invalshoek.
Ook het opzwepende “Le Pontife Écarlate” (“De Scharlaken Hogepriester”) en het zware “Régicide” (“Koningsmoord”) weten sterk te bekoren. Beide nummers ademen dezelfde duistere en historische sfeer uit als “Verdun” en lijken eveneens gebaseerd te zijn op geschiedkundige thema’s. Vooral de combinatie van agressieve riffs, melancholische melodieën en Franstalige teksten geeft Hydre een eigen identiteit binnen het melodieuze Black Metalgenre.
Er is bovendien ruim plaats voor sterk solowerk van de gitaren en ruige, dreigende basloopjes die de nummers extra diepgang en dynamiek geven. Vooral die combinatie van melodieuze leads en robuuste ritmes zorgt ervoor dat de muziek niet enkel agressief, maar ook meeslepend en gelaagd aanvoelt.
Lekker dit, nu nog hopen dat we dit ook fysiek kunnen bemachtigen, tot nu toe geen nieuws over een release.
