As for the name, we are dealing with an intriguing combination of words: Oldowan most likely refers to the Oldowan culture, the oldest known stone tool technology (dating back some 2.6 million years), associated with early hominins. Gash denotes a deep cut or wound, giving the whole a sense of something primitive and violent—a kind of primordial incision, raw and unrefined, as if inflicted with the most basic of tools.
The project surrounding The Forlorn Spirit began around 2016 and steadily evolved in the years that followed. In 2020, the debut album was released, firmly putting the project on the map. In addition, several EPs were released, along with a compilation that gathered earlier material and made it accessible to a wider audience.
The drums this time were performed by someone under the name Longinus, as this instrument is not The Forlorn Spirit’s strongest suit. This collaboration provides a more solid and dynamic rhythmic foundation, adding extra power and depth to the songs. For all other instruments, however, he manages perfectly well, effortlessly maintaining his distinctive sound and atmosphere.
From the opening track Chatechism of Shame Pt. I, Oldowan Gash immediately makes clear what direction it is heading in. The tone is set right away with a relentless, raw intensity that carries through the entire album. In terms of production, there is absolutely nothing to criticize: the sound is clear and crisp, yet retains a filthy edge that fits the genre perfectly. The excellent drum work adds both power and dynamism, ensuring the album never loses momentum and remains consistently compelling.
The more epic title track 1000 Dreams of War seamlessly continues where the previous track left off, driven by a relentless barrage of blast beats and a high tempo. At the same time, it introduces an added sense of grandeur and atmosphere, not just maintaining the intensity but further expanding upon it.
With a sound that leans toward the Swedish side of the Scandinavian spectrum, Oldowan Gash still manages to keep things surprisingly original. Thanks in part to a melodic second guitar and a thick, clearly audible bass layer, the result is a rich and immersive listening experience, making this a particularly strong album.
Special mention must go to the highly successful, fourteen-minute closing track Fighting Forever—what a phenomenal song. Its length allows it to unfold gradually, with atmosphere and intensity constantly shifting and reinforcing one another, resulting in an impressive and memorable finale.
With 1000 Dreams of War, this American artist has delivered a convincing and well-crafted album that is absolutely worth your time. From start to finish, it captivates through its blend of intensity, atmosphere, and musicianship, leaving a lasting impression.

Uit het zonnige L.A. krijgen we hier het allesbehalve zonnige Oldowan Gash voorgeschoteld. Wat de naam betreft hebben we te maken met een intrigerende woordcombinatie: Oldowan verwijst hoogstwaarschijnlijk naar de Oldowan-cultuur, de oudste bekende steentechnologie (zo’n 2,6 miljoen jaar oud), geassocieerd met vroege mensachtigen. Gash staat voor een diepe snee of wond, wat het geheel een associatie geeft met iets primitiefs en gewelddadigs, een soort oersnede, ruw en ongepolijst, alsof toegebracht met de meest basale middelen.
Het project rond The Forlorn Spirit ging rond 2016 van start en groeide in de daaropvolgende jaren gestaag verder. In 2020 verscheen het debuutalbum, waarmee het project zich duidelijk op de kaart zette. Daarnaast werden er, naast enkele EP’s, ook een compilatie uitgebracht, waarin eerder werk werd gebundeld en toegankelijk gemaakt voor een breder publiek.

Voor alle overige partijen wist hij zich daarentegen prima te redden, waarbij hij zijn kenmerkende sound en sfeer moeiteloos wist vast te houden.
Vanaf opener Chatechism of Shame Pt. I laat Oldowan Gash direct horen welke kant het opgaat. De toon wordt meteen gezet met een compromisloze, rauwe intensiteit die zich door het hele album voortzet. Qua productie valt er absoluut niets aan te merken: het geluid is helder en zuiver, maar behoudt tegelijk een ranzig randje dat perfect past binnen het genre. Het puike drumwerk geeft de nummers extra kracht en dynamiek, waardoor het geheel nergens inzakt en constant weet te overtuigen.
Het meer epische titelnummer 1000 Dreams of War gaat naadloos verder waar het vorige nummer ophield, met een aanhoudende stroom aan blastbeats en een hoog uptempo. Tegelijkertijd voegt het nummer een extra laag grootsheid en sfeer toe, waardoor het niet alleen voortborduurt op de intensiteit, maar deze ook verder uitdiept.
Met een duidelijk geluid dat tegen de Zweedse kant van Scandinavië aanschurkt, weet Oldowan Gash het geheel toch verrassend origineel te houden. Mede dankzij een melodieuze tweede gitaar en een dikke, goed hoorbare baslaag ontstaat er een gelaagd en meeslepend geheel, wat van dit album een bijzonder geslaagde plaat maakt.
Een aparte vermelding is zeker op zijn plaats voor de zeer geslaagde, veertien minuten durende afsluiter Fighting Forever, wat een geweldig nummer. Met zijn lengte krijgt het de ruimte om zich langzaam te ontvouwen, waarbij sfeer en intensiteit elkaar voortdurend afwisselen en versterken, en zo een indrukwekkend en memorabel slotstuk vormen.
Met 1000 Dreams of War heeft deze Amerikaan een overtuigend en sterk uitgewerkt album neergezet dat absoluut de moeite waard is. Het geheel weet van begin tot eind te boeien door de combinatie van intensiteit, sfeer en vakmanschap, en laat een blijvende indruk achter.
