The Italian/German outfit Noctivagum has only existed since 2025 and recently came forward with their debut EP De Arcanis et Ritibus Sulphuris. With three Italians – one of whom does not yet appear on this EP, and a German guitarist, the band creates an interesting mixture of sounds that carries both a Scandinavian edge while also clearly drawing from the 90s Italian and Greek scene.
The story “On the secrets and rituals of sulphur,” which is the rough translation of the EP’s title, consists of five tracks accompanied by an intro and outro. After the acoustic intro Initium Caerimoniae, meaning Beginning of the Ceremony , we move, after the crackling of fire, into Ignis. The first thing that becomes noticeable is how drastically the production changes. While the intro still features a nice, clear and especially clean sound, the overall production afterwards shifts towards something much rougher and less balanced.
The guitars sound somewhat muffled, the snare tends to dominate the mix in places, and Wolf’s vocals occasionally come across as slightly forced. That is not entirely unusual, of course; for young bands a first release is often a matter of experimenting and searching for the right balance in production and sound. Still, here it stands out enough to deserve mentioning.
After a short transition we descend further into the darkness with Arcana Noctis , The Secrets of the Night. Especially due to the voice at the beginning, the track carries a slightly Greek atmosphere, while the intro strongly recalls the early work of Rotting Christ. At times the guitar seems to run a little ahead of the drummer, although this corrects itself later in the song.
Make no mistake: the ideas are certainly there. The foundation for some very interesting material is clearly present, but the execution could still use some refinement. A well-planned studio session, preceded by a few weeks of intensive rehearsals, would likely do wonders and allow the compositions to shine much more clearly.
Considering that the band members live several hundred kilometers apart, rehearsing together will inevitably suffer to some degree. Such distance simply makes it harder to meet regularly and develop ideas to their full potential.
On Carpe Noctem, Seize the Night, clear influences from the Italian scene become apparent. Certain passages even bring to mind the later work of Mortuary Drape, with that characteristic dark and ritualistic atmosphere. By the time you reach this track you have also become somewhat accustomed to the production, making the music easier to digest and allowing the compositions to come forward more clearly.
With De Arcanis et Ritibus Sulphuris, Noctivagum clearly shows that beneath the somewhat sloppy production lie several very strong ideas and songs. It will therefore be interesting to see what this band can achieve with a slightly better mix and improved recordings.

Het Italiaanse/Duits gezelschap bestaat pas sinds 2025, en kwam onlangs op de proppen met hun debuut EP De Arcanis et Ritibus Sulphuris. Met drie italianen, waarvan er eentje nog op deze EP niet meespeelt, en een Duitse gitarist krijg je een aparte mix van geluiden die zowel iets Scandinavisch aanhebben maar ook duidelijke invloeden weet te delven uit de jaren 90 Italiaanse en Griekse scene.
Het verhaal “Over de geheimen en rituelen van zwavel”, wat de titel van de EP vrij vertaald betekent, bestaat uit vijf nummers, aangevuld met een intro en outro. Na de akoestische intro Initium Caerimoniae, oftewel Aanvang van de ceremonie, gaan we, na wat knetterend vuur, verder met Ignis. Het eerste wat opvalt is dat de productie meteen een totaal andere richting inslaat. Waar de intro nog een mooie, heldere en vooral cleane sound had, slaat het geluid daarna een duidelijk ruwere en minder gebalanceerde weg in.
De gitaren klinken wat muf, de snare overheerst hier en daar behoorlijk en de zang van Wolf komt soms wat geforceerd naar voren in de mix. Dat is op zich niet heel vreemd: bij jonge bands is een eerste release vaak nog een kwestie van zoeken naar de juiste balans in productie en sound. Toch valt het hier dermate op dat het wel even vermeld moet worden.
Na een korte overgang duiken we met Arcana Noctis, De geheimen van de nacht, de duisternis in. Vooral door de stem aan het begin krijgt het nummer een licht Grieks aandoende sfeer, terwijl de intro ook sterk doet denken aan het vroege werk van Rotting Christ. Af en toe lijkt de gitaar hier net iets vooruit te lopen op de drummer, al herstelt dat zich later in het nummer weer.
Begrijp me niet verkeerd: de ideeën zijn er zeker. De basis voor interessant materiaal ligt duidelijk op tafel, maar de uitwerking kan nog wat verfijning gebruiken. Een goed geplande studiosessie, voorafgegaan door een paar weken intensief repeteren, zou hier waarschijnlijk al wonderen kunnen doen en de composities beter tot hun recht laten komen.
Aangezien dit een band is waarvan de leden enkele honderden kilometers van elkaar vandaan wonen, zal dat repeteren er ongetwijfeld een beetje bij inschieten. Dat soort afstand maakt het nu eenmaal lastiger om regelmatig samen te spelen en ideeën echt tot in de puntjes uit te werken.
Bij het plukken van de nacht, Carpe Noctem, hoor je echter duidelijk invloeden uit de Italiaanse hoek terug. Op sommige passages doet het zelfs denken aan het latere werk van Mortuary Drape, met die typische donkere en ritueel aandoende sfeer. Tegen de tijd dat je bij dit nummer bent aangekomen, ben je overigens ook al enigszins gewend geraakt aan de productie, waardoor het geheel wat makkelijker wegluistert en de composities beter naar voren komen.
Met De Arcanis et Ritibus Sulphuris laat Noctivagum duidelijk horen dat er onder deze nogal slordige productie een aantal heel gave ideeën en nummers verborgen zitten en ik ben dan ook benieuwd wat deze band klaar speelt met een iets betere mix en betere opnames.
