Review: Sathanas/Nunslaughter – Torn Apart

Wolfkult Religion has a keen instinct for pairing bands on their split 7” EPs, and once again they deliver. Two legendary names are brought together on 7” vinyl. These are not brand-new recordings, as this split was already released five years ago on cassette via Nunslaughter Records, but that hardly dampens the excitement. After all, vinyl still feels a lot heavier and more satisfying than tape.

First up is Sathanas, who have been bombarding the underground scene with their blackened Death Metal since 1988, originally operating under the name Bathym in their early years. Once again, we are treated to two crushing tracks, with Winged Black Spirit standing out as the absolute highlight. Pure old-school savagery: hard-hitting, uncompromising, and refreshingly easy to digest. No modern gimmicks, no unnecessary embellishments—just straight-to-the-point Death Metal the way it’s meant to be.

And then there’s Nunslaughter, the American Death Metal band for which it’s nearly impossible to own a complete collection. With close to 300 releases to their name, the sheer volume of material this underground institution has unleashed over the years is staggering. Veteran Donald Crotsley once again proves that experience and inspiration can go hand in hand.

Where he keeps finding the motivation is anyone’s guess, but the fact remains that he pulls it off time and time again. On this split, Nunslaughter serves up three crushing Death Metal rippers that lose none of their impact. Raw, direct, and soaked in that unmistakably filthy Nunslaughter sound, these tracks go down easy. No surprises, no innovation — and that’s exactly where the strength lies.

Featuring strong artwork and limited to 150 copies on black, white, and red vinyl, this is a release you’ll want to grab quickly, as it’s bound to sell out fast.
