Whenever musicians from different underground bands join forces, it remains to be seen what will eventually come out of it. Especially when those involved have each developed their own musical background and distinctive style. Sentries brings together several experienced musicians from the Belgian, Dutch and Norwegian underground, but with Disciples of Void & Fire, they have clearly chosen to follow their own path. The result is a fiercely aggressive and at times downright merciless debut album that also leaves a surprising amount of room for atmosphere and melody.
The members of Sentries are also involved in bands such as Oerheks, Silver Knife, Woudgilde, Taubrą and Deadspeak. Anyone expecting this to be an extension of their other musical activities, however, is in for a surprise. Naturally, there are certain similarities, but Sentries sounds quite different from the bands these musicians are usually associated with. And that is precisely what makes this collaboration so interesting.
Right from the opening moments, the band makes it clear that they have little interest in a gentle introduction. Fierce tremolo picking, furious blastbeats and an aggressive vocal delivery dominate much of the music. Yet Disciples of Void & Fire never turns into a monotonous barrage of violence. The compositions are carefully constructed and regularly interrupted by mid-tempo passages, allowing the guitar work to take on a more threatening and melodic character. Beneath the raw exterior lies a dark, almost ritualistic atmosphere that adds considerable depth to the music.
One particularly strong example is the nearly eight-minute Into the Dawn Beyond Mortality, which, to my ears, is one of the album’s highlights. Here, the interaction between the different musical elements works particularly well. The dissonant guitar lines give the composition a distinctly dramatic and oppressive character, while the constant changes in intensity maintain the tension throughout. There is something almost tragic and deeply unsettling about this track, without Sentries ever losing their venom.
There is little to complain about regarding the production either. Mixing and mastering were handled by Déhà, whose distinctive touch is once again clearly audible. His productions generally have a powerful, full-bodied sound while retaining the necessary grimness, and Disciples of Void & Fire is no exception. The individual instruments remain clearly distinguishable, and the overall sound has plenty of sharpness and impact. After all, a production does not have to sound muffled or muddy to be convincingly dark.
With six compositions and a running time of just over forty minutes, Sentries has plenty of room to develop their musical ideas, and they make good use of it. The tracks never feel rushed, and the musicians put their technical abilities at the service of the music rather than indulging in unnecessary displays of virtuosity. The emphasis remains firmly on the strength of the compositions and how the various elements work together.
With Disciples of Void & Fire, Sentries delivers a convincing debut. The band demonstrates that bringing together experienced musicians from established projects does not necessarily result in a predictable combination of familiar styles. Quite the opposite, in fact. Sentries has managed to establish an identity of its own, where grimness, dissonance and a healthy dose of aggression complement each other remarkably well. A strong first statement that certainly leaves me curious about what this collaboration might bring in the future.

Nederlands:
