Review: Herzog – Mugwort

English:

In 2023, Belgian Black Metal project Herzog, founded by Brussels-based musician Asgeir Amort, released its debut album Furnace through Amor Fati Productions. Three years later, its successor Mugwort arrives under particularly tragic circumstances. Amort passed away in 2025 after battling cancer, while he was still working on completing the album. His wife, Isa Myling, eventually took over part of the vocal duties, turning Mugwort into not only a musical continuation of Furnace, but also their final creative collaboration. Released through Amor Fati Productions, the album contains six compositions with a total running time of approximately 36 minutes.

Musically, Herzog builds upon the foundations established with Furnace. The Black Metal is fierce, occasionally chaotic, and possesses a distinctly oppressive character. Abrasive guitar work, dissonant melodies, and a restless rhythm section create a sound that rarely offers the listener a moment of comfort. Yet beneath all that aggression lies a remarkable sensitivity. The melodies frequently carry a melancholic undertone, preventing the music from becoming merely an expression of anger.

The album opens with Region of the Nest, followed by Dawn of the Prosper and the more than seven-minute-long Trauma. The compositions move between aggressive Black Metal and more atmospheric passages, constantly building tension. The guitars sound sharp and restless, while the vocals add a raw, almost desperate intensity to the music. Herzog certainly does not take the most accessible route. The music twists, scrapes, and rarely allows the listener to sit back comfortably.

An important aspect of Mugwort is the variation in vocals. While we initially hear Asgeir Amort himself, Isa Myling takes over the vocal duties during the latter part of the album. This gives the record a particularly distinctive character. Her contribution is far more than a conventional guest appearance; it forms an essential part of the finished work. The contrasting voices also add another layer of dynamics to the compositions, reinforcing their emotional weight without sacrificing any of the music’s aggression.

With Chaosphonia, Saudade, and the closing Post-Truth, the second half of the album takes shape. The title Saudade, a Portuguese word expressing a profound sense of longing and absence, seems especially appropriate within the context of this record. The music remains intense and uncompromising, yet simultaneously leaves room for melancholy and more restrained moments. This contrast between aggression and vulnerability is one of Herzog’s most interesting qualities.

What stands out is that Mugwort has not become a sentimental farewell album. The dissonant guitars, aggressive outbursts, and restless compositions remain firmly in place. Herzog makes no attempt to smooth out the rough edges of its music in order to make the emotional background more accessible. Quite the opposite: it is precisely the musical harshness that allows the more vulnerable passages to make an even greater impression.

The production complements this character particularly well. The instruments frequently merge into a dense and threatening whole, yet the individual parts retain enough space to make themselves heard. The guitar work deserves particular attention. The riffs are not merely intended to generate aggression, but also contribute to the uncomfortable, sometimes almost suffocating atmosphere. The melodies offer no easy escape, instead seeming to intensify the tension even further.

With six tracks and a running time of approximately 36 minutes, Mugwort is also a relatively compact album. This works in the material’s favour. The compositions are given enough room to develop their tension without unnecessarily stretching the album. The interplay between aggression, dissonance, and melancholy creates a dynamic that suits the character of the music remarkably well.

The combination of raw Black Metal, restless compositions, and emotional intensity makes Mugwort anything but an easy listening experience. Those looking for immediately recognisable melodies and straightforward song structures may not always find what they are searching for here. Herzog deliberately chooses a more confrontational approach, allowing the music to become uncomfortable and unsettling at times. Yet this is precisely where much of its appeal lies.

Naturally, the personal circumstances surrounding this album cannot be completely separated from the music. Nevertheless, it would do Herzog a disservice to regard Mugwort solely as a document of loss. The compositions possess enough character and conviction to stand on their own, even without prior knowledge of the story behind them. That background adds another dimension to the record, but ultimately, it is the musical content that should determine its value.

With Mugwort, Herzog leaves behind an album in which aggression, dissonance, and melancholy come together convincingly. Isa Myling’s remarkable vocal contribution gives the record a distinctive identity, while the guitar work and restless compositions ensure that the music retains its abrasive character throughout.

It is an intense and deeply personal final chapter, but above all, a Black Metal album that deserves to be judged on its own musical merits. And perhaps that is ultimately the most fitting tribute to Asgeir Amort: to be remembered not only for the circumstances under which this record was created, but, more importantly, for the music he left behind.
