Total War sounds as if someone slammed shut the door of a damp rehearsal bunker and then spent the next seventeen minutes smashing everything inside to pieces. There is no grand introduction or carefully constructed atmosphere: Division 52 attacks almost immediately, while keeping the production dirty enough to preserve the chaos.
The foundation is primitive Black/Death Metal with a hefty dose of War Metal, but fortunately speed is not used as the only weapon. Between the eruptions there are enough slow, pounding riffs to give the music some real weight. Especially when Division 52 pulls back the tempo, that filthy sound really comes into its own. The guitars scrape, the drums hammer away and the vocals form a harsh layer over the entire assault.
The fact that Total War does not sound overly tight works in its favour. There is something physical and unpolished about the recording. The rough edges are simply left intact, making it feel more like an actual band hammering away in a room than something meticulously assembled in a studio. The short running time also helps: five tracks are enough to leave considerable damage behind without exhausting the limited musical vocabulary.
Not every moment is equally distinctive, though. Division 52 operates within a style where countless bands use similar ammunition, and occasionally riffs disappear from memory rather quickly. But whenever the band slows things down and brings those heavier, almost marching passages to the foreground, Total War develops considerably more character of its own.
This is not complicated music, nor does it pretend to be. Total War delivers seventeen minutes of filthy, direct and hostile Black/Death/War Metal, convincing primarily because Division 52 never tries to make its music prettier than it needs to be.

Total War klinkt alsof iemand de deur van een vochtige repetitiebunker heeft dichtgetrokken en vervolgens zeventien minuten lang alles binnen kort en klein slaat. Geen grootse introductie of zorgvuldig opgebouwde sfeer: Division 52 valt vrijwel onmiddellijk aan en laat de productie net vuil genoeg om de chaos overeind te houden.
De basis ligt in primitieve Black/Death Metal met een flinke dosis War Metal, maar gelukkig wordt snelheid niet als enige wapen gebruikt. Tussen de uitbarstingen zitten genoeg logge, stampende riffs waardoor de nummers daadwerkelijk gewicht krijgen. Vooral wanneer Division 52 het tempo iets laat zakken, komt die smerige sound goed tot zijn recht. De gitaren schuren, de drums rammen en de vocalen liggen als een rauwe laag over het geheel.
Dat Total War niet overdreven strak klinkt, werkt daarbij in het voordeel van de plaat. Er zit iets fysieks en ongepolijsts in de opname. Kleine rafelranden blijven gewoon zitten en juist daardoor voelt het meer als een band die daadwerkelijk staat te spelen dan als een zorgvuldig in elkaar gezette studioproductie. De korte speelduur helpt eveneens: vijf nummers zijn voldoende om een behoorlijke ravage achter te laten zonder dat de beperkte muzikale middelen uitgeput raken.
Toch is niet ieder moment even onderscheidend. Division 52 beweegt zich binnen een stijl waarin talloze bands dezelfde munitie gebruiken en soms verdwijnen riffs daardoor wat snel uit het geheugen. Wanneer de band echter de snelheid terugschroeft en die zwaardere, bijna marcherende passages naar voren haalt, krijgt Total War duidelijk meer een eigen gezicht.
Geen ingewikkelde plaat dus, en dat probeert hij ook helemaal niet te zijn. Total War is zeventien minuten smerige, directe en vijandige Black/Death/War Metal die vooral overtuigt doordat Division 52 nergens probeert het materiaal mooier te maken dan noodzakelijk.
