Last year, the men of Matavitatau pleasantly surprised me with their debut tape Numen Nescio, a release that impressed not only musically but also through its truly stunning presentation. It was one of those editions where the music and the physical format complemented each other perfectly, embodying everything the underground stands for: passion, dedication, and an eye for detail.
Now the band returns with a new EP, Taeda Inversa. Under the premise that not everyone owns a cassette deck these days—although I personally consider that nothing short of a disgrace if you call yourself a follower of the Black Metal underground—they have chosen to combine this new EP with the debut Numen Nescio. This allows both newcomers and collectors to experience the band’s entire first chapter in a single release, without having to hunt down the increasingly hard-to-find original tape.
It is a smart decision that makes the material more accessible without sacrificing any of the charm of the original release. In fact, it offers the perfect opportunity to place the debut and the new material side by side and hear how the band has evolved over such a relatively short period of time.
Once again, all song titles and lyrics are written entirely in Latin. I have no intention of attempting to translate them. Vocalist Θ is, after all, the true expert when it comes to the language, while Google Translate tends to miss the nuances and context of texts like these almost entirely.
The EP contains five brand-new compositions, soon to be unleashed upon the world through Altare Productions. These five tracks seamlessly continue the atmosphere established on the debut. The band’s own description—“raw poetic black metal hymns in the Latin tongue”—captures the essence perfectly. Deeply rooted in the spirit of the 1990s, yet supported by a production that remains raw without becoming murky, Matavitatau once again manages to strike exactly the right nerve.
With the powerful rhythm section of Loimos on drums and Apovrasma on bass, the dissonant guitar work of Sparakter slicing through the compositions like a sharpened blade, and the unmistakable Latin vocals of Θ, Matavitatau has delivered another excellent release. As far as I understand, it will only be available on CD for now, although I sincerely hope a vinyl edition will eventually follow.

Vorig jaar wisten de mannen van Matavitatau mij al aangenaam te verrassen met hun debuuttape Numen Nescio, een release die niet alleen muzikaal indruk maakte, maar ook werd uitgebracht in een werkelijk schitterende uitvoering. Het was zo’n uitgave waarbij muziek en presentatie elkaar perfect aanvulden en die precies uitstraalde waar de underground voor staat: passie, toewijding en oog voor detail.
Nu keert het gezelschap terug met een nieuwe EP, Taeda Inversa. Onder het motto dat niet iedereen tegenwoordig nog over een cassettedeck beschikt, al vind ik dat persoonlijk een regelrecht schandaal als je jezelf een liefhebber van de Black Metal-underground noemt, is ervoor gekozen deze nieuwe EP te combineren met het debuut Numen Nescio. Op die manier krijgen zowel nieuwkomers als verzamelaars de kans om in één uitgave kennis te maken met de volledige eerste fase van Matavitatau, zonder op zoek te hoeven gaan naar de inmiddels lastig verkrijgbare oorspronkelijke tape.
Het is een slimme keuze die de toegankelijkheid vergroot zonder afbreuk te doen aan de charme van het oorspronkelijke werk. Sterker nog, het biedt een mooi moment om zowel het debuut als het nieuwe materiaal naast elkaar te leggen en te ontdekken hoe de band zich in relatief korte tijd verder heeft ontwikkeld.
Opnieuw zijn alle songtitels en teksten volledig in het Latijn geschreven. Ik waag me dan ook niet aan een poging om deze te vertalen. Zanger Θ is tenslotte de expert als het op deze taal aankomt, terwijl Google Translate de nuance en context van dergelijke teksten vaak volledig mist.
Er zijn dus vijf nieuwe nummers opgenomen voor deze EP die binnenkort via het Portugese Altare Productions de wereld ingeslingerd zal worden, vijf nieuwe nummers die qua sfeer uitermate goed aansluiten bij het debuut werk van de Vlamingen. Zoals de band het zelf al omschrijft als “raw poetic black metal hymns in the Latin tongue” slaan ze eigenlijk de spijker perfect op de kop, met een duidelijke inspiratie uit de jaren negentig en een mooie productie die wel een rauwe rand heeft weten ze ook nu weer die ene zenuw te raken.
Met de stevige ritme sectie van Loimos (drums) Apovrasma op bas, de desonante gitaar partijen van Sparakter die er als een mes doorheen snijden en de unieke Latijnse vocalen van Θ weten Matavitatau met deze EP een prima werkje af te leveren. Zover ik begreep alleen op CD maar hopelijk ook op LP.
