A few years ago, a friend pointed me toward Satanic Witch during a performance by Wolvennest in Maastricht. The project features members of Dudsekop, Length of Time and Wolvennest. Back then, however, it more or less passed me by, perhaps because I simply wasn’t in the right state of mind to fully appreciate what they were doing.
That changed a few months ago when I managed to pick up the album *4:44* during another Wolvennest show in Dendermonde. From the very first listen it became clear that this project offers something remarkably distinctive: a haunting blend of darkness, hypnotic passages and an almost ritualistic intensity that slowly but relentlessly burrows itself beneath the skin. Since then, my appreciation for the band has only continued to grow.
The debut album *4:44* was released in 2023 through Ván Records. Considering that Wolvennest was signed to the same label at the time, it felt only natural that Satanic Witch would find a home there as well. Both projects clearly share a fascination with dark atmospheres, ritualistic influences and a completely uncompromising artistic vision.
Since then, however, quite a few things have changed. As is often the case within the underground scene, collaborations and paths evolve over time. Wolvennest has meanwhile moved to Consouling Sounds, a label that arguably suits their experimental and atmospheric approach even better. This new MCD by Satanic Witch was also released independently rather than through Ván Records.
Another notable change is the departure of both members of E-L-R from the lineup. On the debut album, their combination of clean vocals and harsh screams added a surprising layer of diversity and contrast to the music. On this MCD, however, the vocal duties are handled entirely by guitarist/vocalist Calster, whose feral screams dominate the release from beginning to end.
Musically, the now all-male lineup has not changed much at all. The band still delivers a compelling mixture of traditional Scandinavian Black Metal infused with strong Doom influences, sounding every bit as satisfying as the debut album did. Despite consisting of only four tracks, the MCD still stretches close to the half-hour mark, making it a substantial and highly enjoyable release. That said, I do find myself missing the contribution of the two women from time to time, as their presence gave the debut an additional layer of atmosphere and unpredictability.
The balance between blistering speed, crushing mid-tempo sections and slower Doom-oriented passages once again makes this a highly rewarding release, with the absolute highlight being the eight-minute-long “Abyssus.” Do yourself a favor, head over to Bandcamp and throw ten euros at this band, because let’s be honest: supporting underground music is what it’s all about.

Een paar jaar geleden wees een vriend me tijdens een optreden van Wolvennest in Maastricht al op dit project, waarin onder andere leden van Dudsekop, Length of Time en Wolvennest actief zijn. Destijds ging het eerlijk gezegd een beetje aan mij voorbij, wellicht omdat ik toen nog niet volledig in de juiste sfeer zat om het echt naar waarde te schatten.
Dat veranderde echter enkele maanden geleden, toen ik tijdens een ander optreden van Wolvennest in Dendermonde het album 4:44 wist te bemachtigen. Vanaf de eerste luisterbeurt werd duidelijk dat dit project iets bijzonder eigenzinnigs neerzet: een beklijvende mix van duisternis, hypnotische passages en een haast rituele intensiteit die zich langzaam maar onverbiddelijk onder de huid nestelt. Sindsdien is mijn waardering voor dit project alleen maar gegroeid.
Het debuutalbum 4:44 verscheen in 2023 via Ván Records. Aangezien Wolvennest destijds eveneens onder contract stond bij dat label, voelde het ergens logisch aan dat ook Satanic Witch daar zijn thuis vond. Beide projecten delen immers eenzelfde voorliefde voor duistere sferen, ritualistische invloeden en een compromisloze artistieke visie.
Sindsdien is er echter het een en ander veranderd. Zoals wel vaker gebeurt binnen de undergroundscene, zijn bepaalde samenwerkingen en trajecten geëvolueerd. Wolvennest verhuisde ondertussen naar Consouling Sounds, een label dat misschien nog beter aansluit bij hun experimentele en atmosferische aanpak. Ook deze nieuwe MCD van Satanic Witch verscheen uiteindelijk niet op Ván Records maar in eigen beheer.
Wat ook veranderde was dat de beide dames van E-L-R niet meer in de band zitten, waar op het debuut hun combinatie van heldere zang en screams nog voor de nodige verrassingen en afwisseling zorgde zo wordt deze MCD in zijn geheel geprijkt door de screams van zanger/gitarist Calster.
Muzikaal zijn de ,nu enkel, heren niet veel veranderd, het is nog steeds een mix van traditionele Scandinavische Black Metal met een flinke inslag aan Doom invloeden, eigenlijk weer net zo lekker als het debuut. Met zijn vier nummers die toch samen bijna een half uur in beslag nemen is het dan ook een prima release geworden al mis ik de dames toch wel een beetje.
De mix van snelheid, midtempo en ook enkele meer doom stukken is het weer een prima release geworden met als absoluut hoogtepunt het acht minuten durende Abyssus. Ik zeg allemaal even naar Bandcamp en 10 euries investeren in deze band want laten we eerlijk zijn daar draait het toch om.
