By now, the war in Ukraine has been raging for well over four years. Day after day, we are confronted through the news with images of a conflict that continues to leave its grotesque marks. An end still seems far out of reach, as the reality of destruction and loss relentlessly repeats itself.
Amidst this all-consuming chaos, Altar in Darkness managed to retreat into the shadows to forge their debut album. In early April, this long-awaited first full-length was unleashed upon the world without compromise, a raw and frigid document that unmistakably carries the echo of its circumstances.
Altar in Darkness emerged around 2020, yet has remained largely shrouded in mystery ever since. Concrete details regarding lineup or background are scarce, only adding to the suffocating aura that surrounds the band. What we do know is that the group steadily built its foundation through three EPs and two splits, before now delivering their full-length debut via Victims of Fate.
The album carries a heavy burden: it is dedicated to drummer Navash, who passed away in 2023. Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but given the context in which this music came to life, it leaves little room for optimism. The shadow of loss hangs palpably over this release, not as cheap sentiment, but as an undercurrent of tension that gnaws its way through every note and passage.

From a production standpoint, there is little to criticize. The sound is raw, uncompromising, and stripped of excess. It is cold, harsh, and grim, exactly as it should be within this genre. Do not expect polished modern refinements, but rather a deliberate return to a pure and unfiltered approach.
In terms of composition, variation may be somewhat limited; many of the tracks operate within a similar framework and build upon the same foundation. Yet rather than detracting, this works in the album’s favor. It creates a consistent, almost hypnotic listening experience that gradually pulls the listener deeper into its dark and oppressive world.
All in all, a debut that remains true to its roots and will undoubtedly resonate with fans of the more orthodox, Scandinavian-inspired sound. Definitely worth checking out.

Een einde lijkt nog altijd ver buiten bereik, terwijl de realiteit van vernietiging en verlies zich onophoudelijk blijft herhalen.
Te midden van deze allesverzengende chaos wist Altar in Darkness zich echter terug te trekken in de schaduw om hun debuutalbum vorm te geven. Begin april werd deze langverwachte eersteling dan ook zonder pardon de wereld in geslingerd, als een rauw, kil document dat onmiskenbaar de echo draagt van zijn ontstaanscontext.
Altar in Darkness zag rond 2020 het levenslicht, maar hult zich sindsdien grotendeels in mysterie. Concrete informatie over de bezetting of achtergrond blijft schaars, wat enkel bijdraagt aan de beklemmende aura die de band omringt. Ook op productioneel vlak valt er weinig af te dingen: het geheel klinkt heerlijk rauw en compromisloos. De klank is kil, ijzig en doordrenkt van een grimmige sfeer, precies zoals het binnen dit genre hoort te zijn. Verwacht hier geen overdaad aan franjes of moderne opsmuk, maar eerder een bewuste terugkeer naar een pure, ongepolijste benadering.
Qua compositie is de variatie wellicht niet bijzonder groot; de nummers liggen in elkaars verlengde en bouwen voort op eenzelfde fundament. Toch werkt dit eerder versterkend dan beperkend: het zorgt voor een consistente, bijna hypnotiserende luisterervaring die je langzaam maar zeker meesleurt in zijn duistere wereld. Al met al absoluut de moeite waard om eens te checken, zeker voor liefhebbers van het meer orthodoxe, Scandinavisch geïnspireerde geluid.
