When you come across a band name like Venymysgourvleydh, the first question that naturally comes to mind is: how on earth do you even pronounce this? Unfortunately, I have to leave that question unanswered, as I haven’t been able to find a definitive pronunciation either. What is known, however, is that this is a one-man project by Nostalggia, hailing from Cornwall. It therefore seems likely that the name is derived from Cornish, a Celtic language that is still spoken, albeit to a limited extent, in this region.
A brief search across the web points toward a translation that comes closest to “venom-scattered wolf.” While it’s difficult to confirm this with absolute certainty, partly due to the complex and archaic structure of Cornish, the meaning fits perfectly within the themes and aesthetics of Black Metal. It evokes imagery of something poisonous, feral, and elusive, deeply rooted in nature and mysticism.
I was already familiar with this artist through another project of his bearing an equally complex name: Ynkleudherhenavogyon. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, the project was renamed in 2024 to Drewydhyon Mortid Gwydhyel, which certainly doesn’t make things any easier. Still, that very obscurity contributes to the project’s charm and identity.
I managed to get my hands on Honan Bleydh II on vinyl, and it turned out to be a particularly rewarding purchase. Beyond the musical content, which leans heavily into a strong atmospheric approach, I was especially impressed by the care and dedication invested in the artwork. Every detail radiates passion and a clear artistic vision, elevating it beyond a mere record into a genuine piece of visual art.
Now we turn to the debut of Venymysgourvleydh, a release that was preceded by a string of demos and split releases over the past six years. Fountain of Xulsigae is therefore not an entirely new work, having been recorded between 2020 and 2023, according to our trusted metal archives.
Sonically, the project can best be described as raw Black Metal infused with a trance-like atmosphere, at times even bordering on the psychedelic. It manages to sound repetitive without becoming monotonous, hypnotic without losing its edge, as if slowly pulling the listener into another realm.
The music feels like a dark journey along the rugged coastline of Cornwall, where relentless winds crash against the cliffs and the sea churns endlessly below. From there, you wander onward toward the weathered ruins of Tintagel Castle, shrouded in midnight mist. Everything exudes an archaic, almost mythical atmosphere, as if the music is not merely meant to be heard, but experienced as a ritual beyond time and place.
All in all, a compelling debut. Now it remains to be seen in what form this release will make its way to us via Inverse Solar Reqvriem, as for now it is only available in digital format.

Als je een bandnaam als Venymysgourvleydh tegenkomt, is de eerste vraag natuurlijk: hoe spreek je dit in hemelsnaam uit? Helaas moet ik het antwoord daarop schuldig blijven, want ook ik heb geen sluitende uitspraak kunnen vinden. Wat wél bekend is, is dat dit een eenmansproject is van Nostalggia, afkomstig uit Cornwall. Het ligt dus voor de hand dat de naam afkomstig is uit het Cornish, een Keltische taal die nog steeds in beperkte mate wordt gebruikt in deze regio.
Na een korte zoektocht op het wereldwijde web kom je uit bij een vertaling die het dichtst in de buurt lijkt te komen van “venom-scattered wolf”. Hoewel het lastig is om dit met volledige zekerheid te bevestigen, mede door de complexe en archaïsche structuur van het Cornish, past deze betekenis uitstekend binnen de thematiek en esthetiek van Black Metal. Het roept beelden op van iets giftigs, verwilderds en ongrijpbaars, diep geworteld in natuur en mystiek.
Met deze man was ik al bekend via een ander project van hem met een minstens even ingewikkelde naam: Ynkleudherhenavogyon. Alsof dat nog niet uitdagend genoeg was, werd dit project in 2024 omgedoopt tot Drewydhyon Mortid Gwydhyel, wat de toegankelijkheid er eerlijk gezegd niet bepaald op vooruit helpt. Toch draagt juist die ondoorgrondelijkheid bij aan de charme en identiteit van het geheel.
Van dit project wist ik destijds Honan Bleydh II op vinyl te bemachtigen, en dat bleek een bijzonder geslaagde aankoop. Naast de muzikale inhoud, die zich kenmerkt door een sterke, atmosferische benadering, was ik vooral onder de indruk van de zorg en toewijding die in het artwork zijn gestoken. Elk detail ademt passie en een duidelijke visie, waardoor het geheel niet alleen als muziekdrager functioneert, maar ook als visueel kunstobject.
Maar nu dus het debuut van Venymysgourvleydh, een plaat die vooral gegaan werd door een stapel aan demo’s en split-releases in de afgelopen 6 jaar. Fountain of Xulsigae is dan ook geen splinternieuwe release maar opgenomen tussen 2020 en 2023 aldus onze oude vertrouwde metal encyclopedie.
Met een geluid dat het best te omschrijven is als rauwe Black Metal, doordrenkt met een tranceachtige atmosfeer die op momenten zelfs tegen het psychedelische aan schuurt, weet dit project een bijzonder eigen sfeer neer te zetten. De muziek voelt repetitief zonder eentonig te worden, hypnotiserend zonder zijn scherpte te verliezen, alsof je langzaam wordt meegezogen in een andere werkelijkheid.
Het geheel laat zich het beste verbeelden als een duistere tocht langs de ruige kustlijn van Cornwall, waar de wind onophoudelijk tegen de kliffen beukt en de zee als een eindeloze, dreigende massa onder je kolkt. In die setting dwaal je verder, richting de verweerde ruïnes van Tintagel Castle, gehuld in nacht en mist. Alles ademt een archaïsche, bijna mythische sfeer, alsof de muziek niet alleen gehoord, maar ook beleefd moet worden als een ritueel dat zich buiten tijd en plaats afspeelt.
Alom al een gave debuutplaat, eens afwachten in welke vorm deze in onze richting geslingerd zal worden door Inverse Solar Reqvriem want tot nu toe is hij alleen digitaal te horen.
