For those unfamiliar with the German band Antrisch, Antrisch is an atmospheric black metal band from Würzburg, Germany, that has been bombarding the world since 2020 with their “expeditions,” which they themselves describe as “A musical and lyrical expedition to the heights of the world and the depths of man.” And it must be said, the first two releases, Expedition I: Dissonanzgrat and Expedition II: Die Passage, were on repeat for a very long duration of time. The theme of these first two albums were (failed) expeditions to cold and miserable places. The gentlemen of Antrisch managed to convey this with the precision of an actual polar expedition, so much so that your headphones almost froze to your ears. You truly felt the cold and hopelessness entering through the music. After such masterpieces, the bar is set very high for “Expedition III: Renitenzpfad Marañones”. Let’s see if Maurice Wilson, Robert Falcon Scott, and company can take us on this musical expedition once again…
What stands out immediately is that the theme of the past 6 years (the cold, black-grey covers, and especially ICE!) has been swapped for green. The cover depicts a group of conquistadors in a rainforest, so we will be presented with a fairly thematic change compared to the previous albums.
What also becomes clear immediately with the first track is that the sea shanties/creaking boats have been traded for a more mysterious, Spanish-sounding atmospheric sound. But fear not, after the intro we are treated to the old-fashioned, soul-shattering Antrisch sound. The riffs and themes of Robert Falcon Scott and Alexander Gordon Laing are brilliant once again, the rhythm section of Отто Шмидт and Noel Ewart Odell is incredibly tight, and Maurice Wilson’s vocals are perhaps among the best in the recent modern black metal scene…
Those are big words, of course; can the gentlemen bring this expedition to a (musically) successful conclusion just like the last one?
The answer? A resounding yes! Antrisch manages to seamlessly convey the shift from polar ice to swampy rainforest. After two songs, you imagine yourself in a mosquito-infested rainforest, sticky and sweating. You feel the hopelessness of the ship’s crew, lost in the rainforest. Only to eventually find their way to an even worse fate than being lost in an endless green hell…
I won’t reveal too much about the music here; I leave this journey of discovery to you. For lovers of incredibly tight, atmospheric black metal, I invite you to join Antrisch on an expedition.Expedition III: Renitenzpfad Marañones is being unleashed upon the world via the German label AOP Records and, just like the previous expeditions, is once again accompanied by outstanding artwork.

Voor wie nog niet bekend is met het Duitse Antrisch, Antrisch is een atmosferische black metal band uit Würzburg Duitsland welke sinds 2020 de wereld bestoken met hun “expedities” die ze zelf omschrijven als “Een muzikale en lyrische expeditie naar de hoogten van de wereld en de diepten van de mens”. En het moet gezegd worden, de eerste twee releases, Expedition I : Dissonanzgrat en Expedition II: Die Passage hebben bij mij overuren gemaakt en stonden op repeat. Het thema van deze eerste twee albums waren (mislukte) expedities naar koude en erbarmelijke oorden. De heren van Antrisch slaagden er met de precisie van een daadwerkelijke poolexpeditie dit zo over te brengen dat je koptelefoon bijna aan je oren vastvroor. Je voelde daadwerkelijk de kou en uitzichtloosheid via de muziek binnenkomen.
Na zulke meesterwerken ligt de lat voor “Expedition III: Renitenzpfad Marañones” natuurlijk hoog. We zullen eens kijken wat Maurice Wilson, Robert Falcon Scott en consorten ons wederom kunnen meenemen op muzikale expeditie…
Wat onmiddellijk opvalt is dat het thema van de afgelopen 6 jaar (kou, zwartgrijze hoezen en vooral IJS!) is ingeruild voor groen. De hoes toont een groep conquistadores in een regenwoud, dus we zullen een redelijk thematische verandering voorgeschoteld krijgen ten opzichte van de vorige albums.
Wat ook meteen bij eerste track duidelijk wordt, de zeemansliederen/krakende boten zijn ingeruild voor een meer mysterieuze, Spaans aandoende atmosferische sound. Maar niet gevreesd, na de intro worden we ouderwets getrakteerd op de ouderwetse ziel verscheurende Antrisch sound. De riffs en thema’s van Robert Falcon Scott en
Alexander Gordon Laing zijn weer geniaal, de ritmesectie van Отто Шмидт en Noel Ewart Odell wederom retestrak en vocalen van Maurice Wilson behoren tot misschien wel de beste van de recente moderne black metal scene…
Dat zijn natuurlijk grote woorden, kunnen de heren deze expeditie net als de vorige tot een (muzikaal) succesvol einde brengen?Het antwoord? Een volmondig ja! Antrisch weet de verschuiving van poolijs naar zompig regenwoud naadloos over te brengen. Na twee nummers waan je je zelf in een muggen geïnfesteerd regenwoud, plakkerig, zwetend. Je voelt de uitzichtloosheid van de bemanning van het schip, verdwaald in het regenwoud. Om de weg uiteindelijk te vinden naar een nog erger lot als verdwaald zijn in een eindeloze groene hel…
Over de muziek zal ik hier niet te veel prijsgeven deze ontdekkingsreis laat ik aan julliezelf over. Voor liefhebbers van retestrak geproduceerde atmosferische black metal, ik nodig jullie uit om met Antrisch op expeditie te gaan.
