Review: Astral Spear – Ancient Throne of Sinister Rites

There is a certain kind of black metal that does not immediately overwhelm with speed or volume, but instead creeps in slowly, establishing dominance through atmosphere, repetition and ritualistic intent. Astral Spear operates firmly within that realm, and with Ancient Throne of Sinister Rites they present a debut release that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a prolonged invocation.

From the very start it is clear that this album values immersion. The opening moments unfold patiently, setting a ceremonial tone through murky guitar textures and a distant, almost subterranean drum presence. The production is raw, yet far from careless: every layer feels deliberately placed, allowing the music to breathe while maintaining a suffocating aura. This is not filth for filth’s sake, but controlled decay.

The guitars are the main carriers of atmosphere. Riffs repeat and spiral, often simple on the surface, but effective in how they lock into the rhythm section. Rather than chasing technical excess, Astral Spear relies on hypnotic momentum. Drums alternate between restrained pacing and sudden eruptions, used sparingly to heighten impact rather than to dominate.

Vocals emerge like proclamations echoing through a cavernous hall. They are harsh and commanding, yet never overly forward in the mix. This restraint works in the album’s favor, reinforcing the feeling that the voice is part of the overall rite rather than its focal point. The lyrical delivery adds to the sense of ancient hostility and ceremonial malevolence without breaking the trance the instrumentation builds.

One of the album’s greatest strengths lies in its cohesion. Tracks flow naturally into one another, bound by a shared atmosphere and intent. There are no obvious standout “singles” here; instead, the album rewards full listens. Each track subtly shifts the mood, keeping the listener engaged while maintaining a unified vision. The pacing is deliberate, and while some passages lean heavily on repetition, it rarely becomes monotonous due to careful layering and dynamic shifts.

Ancient Throne of Sinister Rites will not appeal to listeners searching for instant gratification or polished extremity. It demands patience and attention, offering its rewards slowly. For those drawn to occult black metal steeped in ritual, atmosphere and conviction, this debut release stands as a strong and confident statement.
