From the depths of the Brazilian underground rises Fossilization once more with their second full length: Advent of Wounds. The duo has already proven to master the art of suffocating and furious death/doom, focusing not only speed but also on sheer weight, atmosphere and slow crushing pressure that feels almost physical. After leaving a strong mark on me with their debut, Leprous daylight, that hits my speakers every week since release, the question now is simple: can they do this again? The title alone suggests decay, pain and inevitability. Let us find out if Advent of Wounds becomes another monument carved in stone, or just another forgettable album.
As mentioned above, Fossilization performs this album with just two members. Metal Archives tells me they go by the names V & Z. The first one, V, has been the main factor since their beginning in 2020. Z just came looking around for this album, what happened to the drummer of the first full length, a person who goes by the refreshing name P, is not known to me. But the drums on this sophomore album sound great none the less.
Off to the music, the album starts just the way I like my metal, fast and heavy filled with blastbeats. Cremation of a Seraph starts intensely, it instantly fits to my liking. No intro, pure depth and hatred.
It takes a while for them to show their power in the slower sections. And for me to say a slower section is greatly performed, is telling a person with ADHD to sit down and shut up. Maybe biased or not, this is the stuff I want to blast my eardrums with from early morning till my eyes shut again.
All the tracks have a great balance between good and dissonant riffs, yet it takes a few plays to truly catch me with the hooks they provide. Their previous work was more accessible with their catchy riffs. But be not mistaken, this does not underprovide that album. It is an evolution of their sound and heaviness, this is pure darkness in sound waves. To need multiple listenings makes it more interesting to dive into this work. And it does not feel like work at all!
On each track the mix is sounding great, this is partially doomish death but executed perfectly. Each instrument is audible, vocals are soul-ripping. The depths this music reaches is dissonant, but not overdone. In parts it reminds me of Ahklys, Aoratos and such. It also has hints of Dead Congregation, a band I also hold in very high regard.
Overall, Fossilization did it again for me! Advent of wounds is a must have for any death/doom fan. I can not get enough of the sheer power they provide, also executed greatly live. Just take my money and keep tearing down the walls!

Vanuit de krochten van de Braziliaanse underground rijst Fossilization opnieuw op met hun tweede langspeler: Advent of Wounds. Het duo bewees eerder al meesters te zijn in verstikkende en furieuze death/doom, waarbij niet enkel snelheid centraal staat, maar vooral gewicht, atmosfeer en een traag verpletterende druk die bijna fysiek aanvoelt. Na een diepe indruk te hebben nagelaten met hun debuut Leprous Daylight, dat hier sinds de release wekelijks door de speakers knalt, is de vraag eenvoudig: kunnen ze dit kunststukje herhalen? De titel alleen al ademt verval, pijn en onvermijdelijkheid. Tijd om te ontdekken of Advent of Wounds opnieuw een monument in steen wordt, of slechts een voorbijgaande schim.
Zoals eerder vermeld opereert Fossilization ook op deze plaat als duo. Volgens Metal Archives gaan ze schuil achter de namen V en Z. V is sinds de oprichting in 2020 de drijvende kracht achter de band. Z dook specifiek voor dit album op. Wat er gebeurde met drummer P, die op het debuut nog van de partij was, is mij niet bekend. Feit is wel dat de drums op deze tweede langspeler uitstekend klinken.
Muzikaal opent het album precies zoals ik mijn metal het liefst hoor: snel, zwaar en doordrenkt met blastbeats. “Cremation of a Seraph” barst meteen los zonder enige vorm van intro, pure diepte en haat, recht in het gezicht. Geen opbouw, geen waarschuwing, enkel onmiddellijke vernietiging.
Het duurt even vooraleer de band hun kracht in de tragere passages volledig toont. En als ik zeg dat een tragere sectie mij weet te grijpen, dan zegt dat wat,het is alsof je iemand met ADHD vraagt stil te zitten. Toch slagen ze erin om ook in die slepende momenten een verpletterende intensiteit vast te houden. Misschien ben ik bevooroordeeld, maar dit is exact het soort geweld dat ik van ’s ochtends vroeg tot diep in de nacht wil horen.
Alle nummers vinden een sterke balans tussen pakkende en dissonante riffs, al hebben ze meerdere luisterbeurten nodig om zich volledig te openbaren. Het vorige werk was iets toegankelijker dankzij de meer directe hooks. Maar vergis je niet: dit album doet daar niet voor onder. Integendeel, het voelt als een evolutie — zwaarder, donkerder, compacter. Dit is pure duisternis gevangen in geluidsgolven. Dat het meerdere luisterbeurten vraagt, maakt het net interessanter om er dieper in te duiken. En het voelt allesbehalve als werk.
De productie zit bovendien uitstekend in elkaar. De mix klinkt krachtig en helder binnen het death/doom-kader. Elk instrument is hoorbaar, de vocalen klinken alsof ze de ziel uit je lijf scheuren. De dissonantie wordt ver doorgedreven, maar nooit overdreven. Soms doet het me denken aan Ahklys, Aoratos en ook aan Dead Congregation, een band die ik bijzonder hoog inschat.
Conclusie: Fossilization heeft het opnieuw geflikt. Advent of Wounds is een absolute aanrader voor elke death/doom-liefhebber. De pure kracht spat uit elke seconde, en live wordt dat nog eens extra onderstreept. Wat mij betreft: neem mijn geld en blijf muren neerhalen.
