USBM strikes again, Enthroning Nightfall hits us with their first EP The infernal masquerade. Making great black metal is not exclusive to Europe for a long time now, as this band proves it again. There is not much to tell about this band, so let’s dive right into it:
Enthroning Nightfall – The infernal masquerade, released on the 29th of January this year. On this record you can hear two lords. Avgrunn von Ravenlock on the drums and Nachzherer on the vocals, guitars, bass and synths. I can not find anymore about this duo, but from the first note they make clear they mean business.
The EP consists of four tracks and has a total playtime of just under 18 minutes. Does that matter? Not at all! From the first note they set the tone and are able to drag me along with their vision of the true cold winds of the north.
Damned under moonstorms, the first track, it reminds me of many northern second wave bands. The mix is perfect, the synths hit the sweet spot and the aggression is carefully put there. The vocals also hit a true sweet spot, audible enough but sounding far away, like screaming on top of a cold mountain.
The first track is not only blastbeats and power, yet they keep the intensity flowing through other means. Everything adds to the cold feeling.
Only at the third track, Furor the blackest nights imperium, the band truly holds back. The atmospheric part plays a bigger role in these parts. They are still able to keep the music interesting, give every instrument their own spot in the mix and maintain a cold atmosphere, kudos for that!
The last track ‘In times of darkness’ does what they did on the first two tracks, only with less power than the first two tracks. It is great none the less, but it feels as a halfway point of a full length, not an end of an EP.
This band deserves a vinyl release, and please make it a full-length one. This is the kind of rawness and atmosphere black metal needs in my opinion. The opening track plays on repeat over here, hearing vibes from (old) Immortal, Setherial and (old) Satyricon.
Great production, great sound, great atmosphere. Too bad the EP ends with too big of a desire for a full-length. It does not sound complete as for now, and for that I give:

USBM slaat opnieuw toe: Enthroning Nightfall overvalt ons met hun eerste EP The Infernal Masquerade. Al lange tijd is het maken van geweldige black metal niet meer exclusief voor Europa, en deze band bewijst dat opnieuw. Er valt niet veel te vertellen over dit gezelschap, dus laten we er meteen induiken.
Enthroning Nightfall – The Infernal Masquerade, uitgebracht op 29 januari van dit jaar. Op deze release horen we twee heersers: Avgrunn von Ravenlock op drums en Nachzherer op vocals, gitaren, bas en synths. Meer informatie over dit duo kan ik niet vinden, maar vanaf de eerste noot maken ze duidelijk dat ze het menens zijn.
De EP bestaat uit vier nummers en heeft een totale speelduur van net geen 18 minuten. Maakt dat uit? Helemaal niet! Vanaf de eerste noot zetten ze de toon en weten ze me mee te slepen in hun visie op de ware, koude noordenwinden.
“Damned Under Moonstorms”, het openingsnummer, doet me denken aan vele noordelijke second wave-bands. De mix is perfect, de synths raken precies de juiste snaar en de agressie is zorgvuldig gedoseerd. De vocalen zitten ook precies goed: verstaanbaar genoeg, maar met een verre, ijle klank, alsof er wordt geschreeuwd vanaf de top van een ijskoude berg.
Het eerste nummer bestaat niet enkel uit blastbeats en kracht; via andere middelen blijft de intensiteit voortdurend aanwezig. Alles draagt bij aan dat kille gevoel.
Pas bij het derde nummer, “Furor the Blackest Nights Imperium”, houdt de band echt wat in. Het atmosferische aspect krijgt hier een grotere rol. Toch weten ze het interessant te houden, krijgt elk instrument zijn eigen plek in de mix en blijft die koude sfeer intact, respect daarvoor.
Het laatste nummer, “In Times of Darkness”, doet grotendeels wat de eerste twee tracks deden, maar met minder kracht dan het begin van de EP. Het is desondanks sterk, maar voelt meer als een tussenpunt op weg naar een volledige plaat dan als het slotstuk van een EP.
Deze band verdient een vinylrelease, en maak er alsjeblieft meteen een full-length van. Dit is het soort rauwheid en atmosfeer dat black metal nodig heeft, naar mijn mening. Het openingsnummer staat hier op repeat, en ik hoor echo’s van (oude) Immortal, Setherial en (oude) Satyricon.
Sterke productie, sterke sound, sterke atmosfeer. Jammer dat de EP eindigt met een té groot verlangen naar meer. Het voelt nog niet volledig afgerond, en daarom geef ik:
