It is always with a certain sense of disbelief that I find myself holding a Belgian release in my hands. Somehow, our southern neighbors manage to surprise me time and again with music that simply sounds fantastic. This time is no different, as Aerdryk once again proves that Belgium has something truly special to offer.
Behind Aerdryk stands none other than François Breulet, better known under the name Corvus von Brutle. A name you may recognize from projects such as Wolvennest, while he has also been active as a live musician for Oerheks and Illusive Key.
By now we know that the people operating within the circle surrounding bands like Oerheks and Wolvennest are not exactly known for sitting still. The best example of this is undoubtedly Deha, who once again has a hand in things here. That being said, this certainly does not mean everything starts sounding the same or that the scene suffers from an overkill of releases. On the contrary, there seems to be an inexhaustible drive within this circle to explore new directions, with each release managing to carve out its own identity and atmosphere.
Onzuiver marks the second release by Aerdryk. The first album, Met de Drietand op mijn Huid, already appeared in 2022. Back then Corvus von Brutle also managed to enlist the German label Amor Fati Productions to release the record.
It is also worth mentioning that the debut album will receive a reissue, and that a split with Oerheks is planned around the time this new record is released. Speaking of Oerheks, H. also contributed to this album by writing the lyrics for the track Mijn Boetedoening.
In addition to the stunning artwork by Kras, who has previously designed covers for bands such as Oerheks and Silver Knife, the production is also entirely on point. The visual aspect perfectly complements the atmosphere of the music: dark, mysterious and imbued with an almost ritualistic intensity that immediately sets the tone for what follows.
If you appreciate atmosphere, you will feel right at home here. The harsh, abrasive foundation forms the backbone of the album, providing the necessary aggression and rawness. Layered on top of this are beautiful atmospheric guitar riffs that give the music a captivating and almost hypnotic quality. Quite a number of these riffs linger in the mind long after listening, which is not always a given in this kind of dark and layered Black Metal.
The compositions are further enriched by carefully placed keyboard and piano passages, adding depth and nuance to the overall sound. These elements are never overused but instead serve to strengthen the atmosphere and give the songs a more cinematic feel. The result is a dynamic whole in which aggression, melancholy and mysticism constantly intertwine, making the album a particularly intriguing listening experience.
Some clear highlights on this record are Modder en Bloed, Liever Levend Verbrand and Kruispunt, though this certainly does not mean the remaining tracks fall short. Quite the contrary: the album should really be experienced as a Gesamtkunstwerk.
Through this work, Corvus delivers a fierce critique of Christianity while presenting a vision of a better world, one where religion no longer dictates the order of things, but where the earth itself, the aardrijk, takes center stage.
An absolute recommendation for fans of atmospheric Black Metal with a raw and thick edge that pulls the listener into another reality.

Het is telkens weer met een zekere mate van ongeloof dat ik een Belgische release in handen krijg. Op de een of andere manier weten onze zuiderburen me telkens opnieuw te verrassen met muziek die simpelweg fantastisch klinkt. Ook deze keer is dat niet anders, want met Aerdryk levert België opnieuw iets bijzonders af.
Achter Aerdryk schuilt niemand minder dan François Breulet, beter bekend onder de naam Corvus von Brutle. Deze naam zou je kunnen kennen van onder andere Wolvennest, en daarnaast is hij ook actief als live-muzikant voor Oerheks en Illusive Key.
Nu weten we dat de mensen binnen de cirkel rond bands als Oerheks en Wolvennest bepaald niet stil kunnen zitten. Het beste voorbeeld daarvan is ongetwijfeld Deha, die trouwens ook hier weer een vinger in de pap heeft. Dat betekent echter allerminst dat alles op elkaar gaat lijken of dat er sprake is van een overkill. Integendeel: binnen deze scene lijkt er juist een onuitputtelijke drang te bestaan om nieuwe invalshoeken te verkennen, waarbij iedere release toch weer een eigen karakter en sfeer weet neer te zetten.
Onzuiver betreft de tweede release van Aerdryk. De eerste plaat, Met de Drietand op mijn Huid, verscheen reeds in 2022. Ook toen wist Corvus von Brutle het Duitse label Amor Fati Productions te strikken om de plaat uit te brengen.
Wat trouwens alvast vermeld mag worden: die eerste plaat zal opnieuw worden uitgebracht, en er staat eveneens een split met Oerheks gepland tegen de tijd dat deze nieuwe release verschijnt.
Over Oerheks gesproken: ook H. heeft zijn bijdrage geleverd aan dit album. Hij schreef namelijk de tekst voor het nummer Mijn Boetedoening.
Naast het prachtige artwork van Kras, die eerder al hoezen ontwierp voor onder andere Oerheks en Silver Knife, zit ook de productie helemaal goed. Het visuele aspect sluit bovendien naadloos aan bij de sfeer van de muziek: duister, mysterieus en doordrenkt met een bijna rituele intensiteit die meteen de juiste toon zet voor wat volgt.
Als je van atmosfeer houdt, val je hier werkelijk met je neus in de boter. De keiharde, schurende onderlaag vormt de ruggengraat van het geheel en zorgt voor de nodige agressie en rauwheid. Daaroverheen worden echter prachtige atmosferische gitaar-riffs gelegd, die de muziek een meeslepende en bijna hypnotiserende kwaliteit geven. Opvallend genoeg blijven heel wat van die riffs moeiteloos hangen, wat niet altijd vanzelfsprekend is binnen dit soort duistere en gelaagde Black Metal.
Het geheel wordt daarnaast ondersteund door zorgvuldig geplaatste keyboards en pianostukken, die de composities extra diepte en nuance geven. Deze elementen worden nooit overdreven gebruikt, maar dienen juist om de sfeer verder uit te bouwen en de nummers een meer filmisch karakter te geven. Daardoor ontstaat een dynamisch geheel waarin agressie, melancholie en mystiek elkaar voortdurend afwisselen, wat het album tot een bijzonder intrigerende luisterervaring maakt.
Enkele hoogtepunten van dit album zijn zeker Modder en Bloed, Liever Levend Verbrand en Kruispunt, maar het is zeker niet zo dat de rest minder is, integendeel, dit album mag absoluut als Gesamtkunstwerk gezien worden. Corvus zijn aanval op het christendom, zijn visie op een betere wereld waar niet de religie de dienst uitmaakt maar de gehele aarde, het aardrijk.
Een absolute aanrader voor de liefhebbers van Atmospheric Black Metal met een rauwe dikke rand die je meesleept naar een andere realiteit.
