5 april 2026, op deze eerste Zombie Jesus dag reisde ondergetekende af naar Bibilot in Dordrecht voor een avondje (occulte)post-black maar dan anders.
Bij binnenkomst is de halve zaal redelijk gevuld en staat het Franse Aluk Todolo klaar om met hun instrumentale psychedelische post-black/noise het publiek op te warmen. Wat in het oog springt is dat op de plek waar je normaliter een zanger aantreft, nu een grote gloeilamp hangt welke is aangesloten op het gitaar signaal. Samen met de bij vlagen hypnotiserende muziek maakt dit een uniek schouwspel. Gitarist Shantidas Riedacker weet met zijn eigenzinnig gitaarspel het publiek, ondanks de complexiteit van hun muziek toch goed te pakken. Hier en daar komt zelfs wat beweging in het publiek.
Eerlijk is eerlijk, op plaat weet ik niet goed wat ik met AlukTodolo aan moet. Kort gezegd, het is niet mijn ding. Maar live weten de heren mij toch te overtuigen. Een zeer geslaagde opwarmer voor Hexvessel.
Hoofdact van de avond is het Finse Hexvessel, welke de afgelopen jaren indruk maakte met onder andere hun concert opRoadburn en het daaruit volgende album Nocturne. Met hun atmosferische post-black geluid weten de heren onder leiding vanMathew Kvohst McNerney het publiek vanaf de eerste noot meteen te pakken. Het geluid is loepzuiver en in balans, alle instrumenten zijn goed te horen en komen goed binnen,complimenten aan Bibelot. De heren hebben er ondanks, dat ze aleen aantal avonden achter elkaar hebben gespeeld er duidelijk zin in om de aanwezigen met hun muziek mee te nemen op hun muzikale reis.
Het geluid/muzikale richting die met Polar Veil en Nocturne zijn ingeslagen wordt met zichtbaar gemak en enthousiasme de zaal in geslingerd. Ruim een uur staan de heren op het podium, maar het voelde korter.
Kortom, Hexvessel heeft met hun eigen unieke geluid wederom weten te overtuigen. Jammer dat het “maar” een halve zaal als publiek had, deze band verdiend zeker een groter publiek.
Mocht je de kans krijgen deze heren ergens live te zien, zeker de moeite waard!
April 5, 2026, on Zombie Jesus day, yours trully traveled to Bibelot in Dordrecht for an evening of (occult) post-black but with a twist.
Upon entering, half of the hall is reasonably filled, and the French band Aluk Todolo is ready to warm up the audience with their instrumental psychedelic post-black/noise. What stands out is that, in the place where you would normally find a singer, there is now a large light bulb connected to the guitar signal. Together with the occasionally hypnotizing music, this creates a unique spectacle. Guitarist Shantidas Riedacker manages to captivate the audience with his idiosyncratic guitar playing, despite the complexity of their music. Here and there, some movement even appears in the audience.
To be fair, on record, I don’t really know what to make of Aluk Todolo. In short, it’s not my thing. But live, the gentlemen manage to convince me. A very successful warm-up for Hexvessel.
The main act of the evening is the Finnish Hexvessel, who in recent years have impressed with, among other things, their concert at Roadburn and the resulting album Nocturne. With their atmospheric post-black sound, the gentlemen led by Mathew Kvohst McNerney manage to captivate the audience from the very first note. The sound is crystal clear and balanced, all instruments can be clearly heard and resonate well, compliments to Bibelot. Despite having played several nights in a row, the gentlemen are clearly eager to take the audience along on their musical journey.
The sound/musical direction they embarked on with “Polar Veil” and “Nocturne” is thrown into the hall withvisible ease and enthusiasm. The gentlemen are on stage for over an hour, but it felt shorter. In short, Hexvessel has once again managed to impress with their own unique sound. It’s a pity that the audience was “only” half the hall; this band certainly deservesa bigger audience.
If you get the chance to see these gentlemen live somewhere, definitely worth it!
