Ten years of activity and a discography that already includes a considerable number of demos, EPs and albums: sitting still clearly does not appear to be part of Buer’s vocabulary. Behind the Belgian project stands Lord Kaos, who has been unleashing new material at a steady pace since 2016. Spirit of Hell is the latest addition to that ever-growing pile, offering four tracks in just over sixteen minutes.
With titles such as Rise of the Blackened God, Infernal Chambers of Torture and Satanic Warfare, there is little need to search for hidden messages. Buer fully embraces the traditional Satanic imagery of Black Metal, without irony or any desire to make the concept more complicated than necessary. That same directness can be found in the music.
At over six minutes, Rise of the Blackened God immediately takes up a substantial part of the EP. The music is kept raw and primitive, with repetitive riffs and a grim atmosphere taking precedence over technical display. Buer prefers to let riffs linger rather than constantly replacing them, creating an occasionally hypnotic effect despite the deliberately rough approach.
Infernal Chambers of Torture and Satanic Warfare continue along the same path. There is enough variation in tempo to prevent Spirit of Hell from becoming one continuous wall of noise, yet Buer never loses its primitive character. The production suits this perfectly. Everything sounds grainy and filthy without allowing the songs to disappear completely beneath a layer of noise. It gives the music exactly the right basement-like character while keeping the riffs recognisable.
What stands out is how little interest Lord Kaos seems to have in making his music sound bigger than it actually is. There are no excessive arrangements or attempts to create some grand sense of epic splendour; Buer relies primarily on simple riffs, repetition and atmosphere. That is precisely why Spirit of Hell feels sincere. This is Black Metal created out of an obvious appreciation for the genre’s most basic and primitive qualities.
After three full tracks, the EP closes with the little-over-a-minute Eternal Black Flame. Rather than providing an elaborate finale, it functions as a short closing piece that brings the sixteen-minute descent to a fitting end.
Buer will not convince anyone who constantly searches for innovation within Black Metal with Spirit of Hell. But that does not appear to be the intention in the first place. Over the past decade, Lord Kaos has constructed his own small underground world and continues to stubbornly wander through it. Spirit of Hell is another short but convincing sign of life from within: primitive, filthy and with absolutely no desire to give its hellfire a modern coat of polish.

Tien jaar activiteit en een discografie die inmiddels een behoorlijke hoeveelheid demo’s, EP’s en albums omvat: stilzitten lijkt niet bepaald in het woordenboek van Buer voor te komen. Achter het Belgische project gaat Lord Kaos schuil, die sinds 2016 met grote regelmaat nieuw materiaal de wereld in slingert. Spirit of Hell is de nieuwste toevoeging aan die almaar groeiende stapel en levert vier nummers op in iets meer dan zestien minuten.
Wie titels als Rise of the Blackened God, Infernal Chambers of Torture en Satanic Warfare leest, hoeft niet lang te zoeken naar verborgen boodschappen. Buer omarmt de traditionele satanische beeldtaal van Black Metal volledig en doet dat zonder ironie of behoefte om het concept ingewikkelder te maken dan nodig. Diezelfde directheid vinden we terug in de muziek.
Rise of the Blackened God neemt met ruim zes minuten meteen een flink gedeelte van de EP voor zijn rekening. De muziek is rauw en primitief gehouden, waarbij repetitieve riffs en een grimmige sfeer belangrijker zijn dan technische hoogstandjes. Buer laat riffs liever een tijdje rondspoken dan ze voortdurend af te wisselen, waardoor er ondanks de ruwe aanpak regelmatig een hypnotiserend effect ontstaat.
Infernal Chambers of Torture en Satanic Warfare zetten die lijn voort. Het tempo wisselt voldoende om te voorkomen dat Spirit of Hell één lange muur van herrie wordt, maar nergens verliest Buer zijn primitieve karakter. De productie past daar uitstekend bij. Alles klinkt korrelig en vuil, zonder dat de nummers volledig verdwijnen onder een laag ruis. Het is precies genoeg om de muziek dat kelderachtige karakter te geven zonder de riffs onherkenbaar te maken.
Opvallend is hoe weinig behoefte Lord Kaos lijkt te hebben om zijn muziek groter te laten klinken dan ze daadwerkelijk is. Geen overdadige arrangementen of pogingen om een epische grandeur te creëren; Buer vertrouwt voornamelijk op eenvoudige riffs, herhaling en sfeer. Juist daardoor voelt Spirit of Hell oprecht. Dit is Black Metal gemaakt vanuit een duidelijke liefde voor de meest basale en primitieve eigenschappen van het genre.
Na drie volwaardige nummers wordt de EP afgesloten met het slechts iets meer dan een minuut durende Eternal Black Flame. Geen uitgebreide finale, maar een kort slotstuk dat de zestien minuten durende afdaling passend beëindigt.
Buer gaat met Spirit of Hell niemand overtuigen die binnen Black Metal voortdurend op zoek is naar vernieuwing. Dat lijkt echter ook totaal niet de bedoeling. Lord Kaos heeft gedurende het afgelopen decennium zijn eigen kleine ondergrondse wereld opgebouwd en blijft daar koppig in rondwaren. Spirit of Hell is daar opnieuw een kort maar overtuigend teken van leven uit: primitief, smerig en zonder enige behoefte om het hellevuur van een modern laagje vernis te voorzien.
