Review: White Baroness – War Chariots LP

Finns are wild men — we already knew that. And the fact that Finns love Black Metal is hardly a new revelation either. A few Finnish bands that, besides delivering furious, hard-hitting Black Metal, also embrace a hefty dose of ’80s and ’90s flair — not to mention a passion for dressing up — include MorgalDevil WizardDevil Moon, and Mutant Sex Demon.

Now it just so happens that a few members from these bands have put their heads together and unleashed a new album upon the world under the banner of White Baroness.

With T.A.P.P. (Morgal) on bass and Hateful Void (Morgal) behind the drums, the rhythm section is already tight as hell and heavy as granite. Add to that Hell Priest of Nocturnal Mass (Sigon, Devil Wizard) on guitar, and none other than Magister Salax D’Volta — also known as Mutant Sex Demon or Lord Warmoon (Sigon, Mutant Sex Demon) — on vocals. The latter just happens to be Hateful Void’s brother, which only adds to the band’s wild chemistry.

If that doesn’t promise pure madness — complete with chaos, overindulgence, and Finnish lunacy — then I don’t know what does.

What we get is a thick slab of Black/Thrash Metal, bursting with raw energy and drenched in the essence of the ’80s — a tribute to an era when everything sounded filthy, dangerous, and gloriously unhinged. You can hear it all: the grimy, chaotic South American vibe of bands like SarcófagoSextrash, and other legendary Cogumelo Records acts of that time, as well as the savage, no-nonsense aggression of early Destruction and Sodom.

All of this is coated in a rich ’90s sound layer that gives the rawness extra heft and punch. The result is a brutal, uncompromising record that screams for more, more, and even more— pure ecstasy for anyone who craves filthy riffs, relentless speed, and a healthy dose of chaos.

In short, you get exactly what the cover art and that insanely cool logo promise — a killer slab of vinyl. My advice? Spin it loud.
