The Spanish Death/Doom metal outfit Onirophagus debuted in 2012 with their Defiler of Hope EP. Thirteen years and two albums later, they now return with their third full-length, Revelations From The Void.
If we take their previous album, Endarkenment: Illumination Through Putrefaction, as a recent reference point, things have only gotten darker and heavier. While their 2019 album featured distinct Death Metal solos reminiscent of the American Death Metal scene, this time, we are met with massive, crushing riffs that plunge deep into the lower registers, occasionally bringing to mind early Cathedral.
The production is slightly sharper and a bit rawer than on the previous album, which only enhances the overall experience. From time to time, I even catch hints of Black Metal influences, especially when vocalist Paingrinder delivers a semi-clean vocal that vaguely recalls Rotting Christ.
It all sounds a bit more English overall, especially Stargazing into the Void, which carries strong (old) My Dying Bride vibes and feels absolutely great. The violin adds an extra dimension, transporting us back to the glory days of mid-’90s Doom/Death Metal.
With highlights like the crushing Black Brew and the nostalgic Stargazing into the Void, this album is a perfect listen for these last cold mornings before we can welcome spring again.
With Revelations from the Void, Onirophagus delivers a satisfying trip down memory lane. I sincerely hope they continue down this path because this definitely leaves me wanting more.
