Due to his disgust with the Black Metal scene over the past 25 years and the glaring lack of true Satanic themes within it, JB, known for projects such as Vazal, decided in 2002 to offer a countervoice. This culminated in 2004 with the release of the demo Sole Insanity Invading the Mind, in which he showcased his vision of raw, uncompromising Black Metal. Now, 21 years later, JB returns with a new release, the follow-up to Let Them Be Naïve from 2018, once again claiming his place in the scene and leaving his dark, unmistakable mark on the genre.
With only three tracks, but a total runtime of 35 minutes, JB manages to leave a crushing dent in your self-awareness. His meticulously crafted blend of dark noise and raw Black Metal strikes deep, hitting the spot where doubt and fear converge, shaking your very sense of self-reliance. Each track feels like a confrontation with your inner demons: the piercing riffs, shrieking vocals, and disturbing soundscapes combine to create a sense of disorientation and existential unease. This is not merely music; it is an auditory subversion, a hypnotic storm that drags you into a world dominated by chaos and darkness.
Especially on Towards the Lurking Absence of Time and Space, you are carried for over 17 minutes through a cacophony of noise and synthesizers, slowly but relentlessly descending toward an abyss where it feels as if Satan himself is delivering a blow to your ears. The result is raw, sinister, utterly destructive, and profoundly uncomfortable—exactly as intended. The comparison to Abruptum is immediate, yet JB manages, with YMesh, to give it a distinctly personal twist, where chaos and darkness walk hand in hand, immersing the listener fully in his bleak vision.
This is not for those who enjoy a predictable slice of atmospheric Black Metal—although, in some ways, this tape carries more atmosphere than many modern releases I’ve heard. This is for those who want to immerse themselves in sound that provokes, that rattles something deep within you. This border between madness and sheer lunacy is exactly what we seek.
