Loyal viewers of the series Vikings will undoubtedly recognize the name Uppsala as the mythical location of the great Temple of Odin. Historically, that image is largely accurate: Old Uppsala was indeed a major religious center in the Norse world. But over the past thousand years, much has changed. The pagan temple gave way to Christianization, stone, and urban development. Today, Uppsala is a vibrant university city, where the weight of the past still lingers like a shadow over its streets.
From that very same Uppsala, Nazghor emerged in 2012. In just over a decade, the band has built an impressive discography, enduring nearly as many lineup changes along the way. Yet the core has remained intact: uncompromising, relentless Black Metal with a distinctly Scandinavian edge.
With A World Ablaze, the Swedes deliver their eighth full-length album, an achievement in itself in a genre where many bands falter after one or two releases. But Nazghor does more than merely endure; they strike harder than ever.
A World Ablaze burns, consumes, and purify, confirming that Nazghor, much like their hometown, rises from the ashes time and time again.
The band shared the following statement about the album:
“In 1702, a relentless fire tore through Uppsala and left the city in ruins. Three centuries later, that night still haunts our hometown. ‘A World Ablaze’ is our tribute to Uppsala’s fallen heritage and our own history. Old songs rise again, reforged in fire and darkness. This album is an offering to a city that rose from the ashes, and to a band that still burns.”
Now we know exactly what we are dealing with. A strong historical foundation,something I can always appreciate. But ultimately, it is the music that matters, and that is where A World Ablaze truly bares its teeth.
You don’t need an academic degree in Black Metal to recognize the contours of its influences. I hear echoes of Marduk in the merciless speed, the melodic sharpness of Thulcandra, the icy precision of Dissection, and certainly the dark grandeur of Necrophobic. In other words: Scandinavian-oriented Black Metal where melody is not a weakness, but a weapon. At times, subtle keyboard layers add extra atmosphere without diluting the aggression.
The production also deserves special mention. Crystal clear, yet never sterile. The guitars are perfectly balanced in the mix, cutting through the whole like a hot knife through butter. Every tremolo riff stands firm amid the storm of blast beats and shrieking vocals, while the drums thunder forward with precision and force.
Tracks like the opener Cursed and Unblessed immediately set the tone with furious riffs and an unforgiving pace. Baptized in Blood surprises with an almost groovy undercurrent, without sacrificing an ounce of venom. These are precisely the moments where Nazghor prove they are more than a band that simply charges straight ahead; there is a clear sense of dynamics, of tension-building, of melody that lingers without losing its edge.
This is fire under control and that makes it burn all the fiercer.

Met A World Ablaze leveren de Zweden inmiddels hun achtste langspeler al, een prestatie op zich in een genre waar veel bands sneuvelen na één of twee platen. Maar Nazghor blijft niet alleen overeind; ze slaan harder dan ooit.
A World Ablaze brandt, verteert en zuivert — en bevestigt dat Nazghor, net als hun thuisstad, keer op keer herrijst uit de as.
De band gaf het volgende statement over dit album: “In 1702 werd Uppsala getroffen door een nietsontziende brand die de stad in puin achterliet. Nu weten we meteen waarmee we te maken hebben. Een brok geschiedenis als fundament — daar kan ik altijd wel iets mee. Maar uiteindelijk draait het om de muziek, en daar laat A World Ablaze pas echt zijn tanden zien.
Wat invloeden betreft hoef je geen academische graad in Black Metal te hebben om de contouren te herkennen. Ik hoor flarden van Marduk in de nietsontziende snelheid, de melodische scherpte van Thulcandra, de ijzige klasse van Dissection en ook zeker de duistere grandeur van Necrophobic. Met andere woorden: Scandinavisch georiënteerde Black Metal waarin melodie geen zwaktebod is, maar een wapen. Soms subtiel ondersteund door keyboards die net dat extra laagje atmosfeer toevoegen zonder de agressie te temperen.
De productie verdient ook een aparte vermelding. Kristalhelder, maar zonder steriel te worden. De gitaren zijn perfect in balans gemixt en snijden door het geheel heen als een heet mes door een pakje boter. Elke tremoloriff blijft overeind in de storm van blastbeats en snerpende vocalen, terwijl de drums strak en krachtig doordenderen.
Tracks als opener Cursed and Unblessed zetten meteen de toon met furieuze riffs en een onverbiddelijk tempo. Baptized in Blood verrast dan weer met een bijna groovy ondertoon, zonder ook maar een moment aan venijn in te boeten. Het zijn precies dat soort momenten waarop Nazghor laat horen dat ze meer doen dan enkel rechtdoor rammen; hier zit gevoel voor dynamiek, voor spanningsopbouw, voor melodie die blijft hangen zonder aan scherpte te verliezen.
Dit is vuur dat gecontroleerd woedt, en daardoor des te harder brandt.
