In 2025, a meticulously crafted promo tape suddenly surfaced from the mysterious German collective Junon. It arrived with little context, yet with unmistakable intent. Rumors quickly began to circulate about the involvement of members from Imha Tarikat, Hidden in the Fog, and Temple Koludra, an intriguing combination that immediately raised expectations. Still, one figure remains central: the enigmatic Junon, who appears to act as both the axis and possibly the conceptual mastermind guiding the project.
Two tracks from that now cult-like promo have made their way onto the debut album, set for release in May via I, Voidhanger Records.
Musically, Junon operates within a twilight realm between furious black metal and more atmospheric, introspective passages. The alleged influences are certainly audible, yet never overwhelming. Where Imha Tarikat is known for its intensity and directness, and Hidden in the Fog leans toward melancholic expansiveness, Junon fuses these elements into something both ominous and hypnotic. The result ranges from blistering black metal assaults to passages that evoke the unsettling intensity of Diamanda Galás, moments that genuinely make the hairs on your neck stand on end.
What truly sets Junon apart is its aura of mystery, which never feels forced. In a scene where anonymity is often deployed as a gimmick, here it seems like an organic extension of the music itself. Junon feels less like a band and more like an entity, a lurking presence that only partially reveals itself.
The absolute highlight of this debut is without question the sprawling, twenty-minute epic Dolorosa, named after the Via Dolorosa, the street in Jerusalem where, according to the Bible, a man known as Jesus Christ walked his final path toward crucifixion. Junon distills this theme into a composition of near-epic proportions, amplifying and deepening everything hinted at in the preceding tracks.
Here again, the influence of Diamanda Galás becomes unmistakable. Whether Junon explicitly acknowledges her as an inspiration is uncertain, but the resemblance is striking. It strongly recalls The Divine Punishment from 1986, a work that left listeners shaken with its raw, unrelenting intensity.
The Golden Citadel of the Astral Sphere stands as an exceptionally strong debut from this enigmatic German entity. With a form of black metal that feels anything but stereotypically “German,” Junon strikes a deeply resonant chord. For now, the album has only been announced on CD and tape, one can only hope that a vinyl release will follow.

In 2025 dook er plots een tot in de puntjes verzorgde promo tape op van het mysterieuze Duitse collectief Junon. Zonder veel context, maar met des te meer intentie. Al snel gingen er geruchten rond over betrokkenheid van leden uit Imha Tarikat, Hidden in the Fog en Temple Koludra, een intrigerende cocktail die de verwachtingen onmiddellijk opschroefde. Toch blijft één figuur centraal staan: de enigmatische Junon, die als spil en mogelijk conceptueel brein de richting bepaalt.
Twee nummers van die inmiddels cult-achtige promo hebben de oversteek gemaakt naar het debuutalbum, dat in mei via I, Voidhanger Records verschijnt.
Muzikaal beweegt Junon zich in een schemerzone tussen furieuze black metal en meer atmosferische, introspectieve passages. De vermeende invloeden zijn hoorbaar, maar nergens dominant. Waar Imha Tarikat bekendstaat om zijn intensiteit en directheid, en Hidden in the Fog eerder de melancholische breedte opzoekt, weet Junon deze elementen te versmelten tot iets dat zowel dreigend als hypnotiserend aanvoelt. Van furieuze Black Metal tot bijna Diamanda Galas achtige passages die je nekharen laten rechtstaan.
Wat Junon vooral onderscheidt, is de aura van mysterie die niet geforceerd aanvoelt. In een scene waar anonimiteit soms als gimmick wordt ingezet, lijkt het hier een organisch verlengstuk van de muziek zelf. Junon is minder een band en meer een entiteit, een sluimerende aanwezigheid die zich slechts gedeeltelijk laat kennen.
Het absolute hoogtepunt van dit debuutalbum is zonder twijfel het ruim twintig minuten durende epos Dolorosa—vernoemd naar de Via Dolorosa, de straat in Jeruzalem waar volgens de Bijbel een man genaamd Jesus Christ zijn laatste lijdensweg aflegde richting zijn kruisiging. Junon heeft dit thema samengevat in een compositie van bijna epische proporties, waarin alles wat we in de drie voorgaande nummers hoorden nog eens aanzienlijk wordt uitvergroot en verdiept.
Ook hier hoor ik opnieuw die duidelijke invloeden van Diamanda Galás. Of zangeres Junon haar daadwerkelijk als inspiratiebron ziet, weet ik niet, maar de associatie is onmiskenbaar. Het roept sterk herinneringen op aan The Divine Punishment uit 1986—een werk dat destijds bij menig luisteraar kippenvel veroorzaakte dankzij de intense en nietsontziende voordracht van Galás.
The Golden Citadel of the Astral Sphere is een zeer sterk debuut van dit mysterieuze gezelschap uit Duitsland die met hun on-typisch Duits klinkende vorm van Black Metal bij mij in ieder geval een gevoelige snaar hebben weten te raken. Vooralsnog alleen aangekondigd als CD en Tape, even hopen dat het geheel zich ook op vinyl zal manifesteren.
