When it was decided in 1667, at the Peace of Breda, that New Amsterdam would pass into English hands and be renamed New York, there was, of course, no such thing as a Black Metal scene in that very city. Now, 359 years later, we are presented with a rather intriguing EP from New York-based outfit Absent Ritual.
On their debut EP, bearing the grand title “The Cryptic Descent: A Compilation Of Madness”, we are confronted with three tracks that each seem to draw from a different sonic palette. The opener, “Darkness Divine”, can best be described as a more traditional mid-tempo Black Metal piece, infused with a distinct 90s atmosphere. Its riffing and pacing evoke the spirit of the genre’s second wave, offering a familiar yet solid introduction.
With “Ruiner”, the band shifts gears into more psychedelic territory. This track stands out as the most engaging of the three, largely due to its dynamic structure and variation. The interplay between different moods and tempos gives it a slightly experimental edge, while still maintaining a connection to the Black Metal foundation.
Finally, “A Savage Rage” takes a completely different turn, delving fully into Dungeon Synth. This stylistic departure creates a stark contrast with the previous tracks and reinforces the impression that this EP is more a collection of disparate ideas than a cohesive artistic statement.
While the subtitle “A Compilation Of Madness” does provide some justification for this diversity, it also makes it difficult to determine the band’s true direction. Whether this is a deliberate artistic choice or a sign of a band still searching for its identity remains unclear.
After some digging, a few details about the individuals behind the project have surfaced. As is often the case, the usual encyclopedic sources offer little to no information, but Spotify reveals a few names. The main composer and drummer appears to be Azam Di, with James Bea handling bass duties and Manuel Na responsible for guitar and vocals.
All in all, this EP showcases a band with ideas and potential, but also one that could benefit from a clearer sense of direction. If Absent Ritual manages to unify their diverse influences into a more cohesive whole, they may well have something compelling to offer in the future.

Nu, 359 jaar later, krijgen we echter een bijzondere EP voorgeschoteld van de New Yorkse band Absent Ritual.
Op hun debuut-EP, die de imposante titel “The Cryptic Descent: A Compilation Of Madness”meekreeg, treffen we drie nummers aan die elk uit een ander vaatje lijken te tappen. De opener, “Darkness Divine”, laat zich het best omschrijven als een meer traditioneel, mid-tempo Black Metal-nummer met duidelijke invloeden uit de jaren ’90. De sfeer is duister en vertrouwd, met riffs en structuren die liefhebbers van de klassieke tweede golf zeker zullen aanspreken.
Met “Ruiner” slaat de band een andere richting in. Hier worden meer psychedelische elementen verkend, en dankzij de variatie en dynamiek weet dit nummer het meest te intrigeren. De afwisseling in tempo en sfeer geeft het geheel een licht experimenteel karakter, zonder de kern van het genre volledig los te laten.
Afsluiter “A Savage Rage” gooit het roer vervolgens volledig om en begeeft zich in het domein van Dungeon Synth. Dit zorgt voor een opvallende breuk met de voorgaande tracks en versterkt het gevoel dat deze EP eerder een verzameling uiteenlopende ideeën is dan een coherente muzikale visie.
Hoewel de ondertitel “A Compilation Of Madness” deze veelzijdigheid enigszins rechtvaardigt, maakt het het tegelijkertijd lastig om te bepalen waar Absent Ritual precies naartoe wil. Is dit een bewuste artistieke keuze, of bevindt de band zich nog in een zoekende fase?
Na enig speurwerk zijn ook de personen achter dit project deels te achterhalen. In de gebruikelijke encyclopedieën is wederom weinig tot niets te vinden, maar via Spotify duiken toch enkele namen op. De hoofdcomponist en drummer lijkt Azam Di te zijn, terwijl James Bea de bas voor zijn rekening neemt en Manuel Na verantwoordelijk is voor gitaar en zang.
Al met al laat deze EP een band horen met potentie en ideeën, maar ook met een duidelijke behoefte aan focus. Mocht Absent Ritual erin slagen om hun uiteenlopende invloeden te bundelen tot een meer samenhangend geheel, dan zou hier in de toekomst wel eens iets interessants uit kunnen voortkomen.
