Autrest has not been on my radar until now. A solo project from Brazil by Matheus Vidor, released a demo and full length (2022 and 2023). For the first time I come into contact with his music, as he released his second full length; ‘Burning embers, forgotten wolves’.
The beginning of the album sounds very serene, an acoustic guitar playing a melodie that chains to the heart. While being guided with strings it sets the mood for an atmospheric journey. Synths take over the soundscape as a guitar echoes through the mind. I cannot wait to hear more!
After the ‘intro’ the acoustic guitar plays right through the first real opener. ‘Ashes from the burning embers’ starts very strong with a great defined beat, a sense of greatness is dictated here. The atmosphere hits you from the first second, and after a while the music opens up again to truly drag you into the music.
Immediately they remind of Winterfylleth and Drudkh, that being a great compliment coming from a person who delves more into the faster kind of music. But this grabbed my interest from the first beat after the intro. It is like walking through the ice cold forests of Scandinavia, while being a solo project by Matheus Vidor, coming from Brazil. Apparently cold comes from within and is not bound by borders.
After two tracks of great atmosphere we are greeted again by a more simplistic and heartfelt piece. Normally I despise soft hearted instrumental pieces. But they form a link from one track to another, and keep the feeling alive. The album tells a story, one with emotions and atmosphere.
After this piece my favorite track comes to play: ‘Ruins of the lost’. This track has such a great opening riff, guitars are clinging under the skin, the bass guides everything with a dark undertone and the drums are exactly where they need to be.
There are multiple tracks that deserve compliments, but the album excels when being played front to back. Everything feels like it’s being crafted carefully together, really telling a story and giving a glimpse into the mind of Matheus Vidor. Highly recommended for fans of Winterfylleth and bands alike.
