Review: Hulder – A Beacon from Darkened Skies EP

Back in January we were treated to the split tape with One of Nine, and now Marliese returns with a brand-new tape EP. This release contains two tracks that differ strongly in atmosphere and intensity: on the one hand, a true Black Metal banger that could easily have been ripped straight out of the ’90s, and on the other, an intimate folk song that shows a completely different, yet equally captivating side of Hulder.

On this tape she is joined by her husband Necreon, handling both bass and vocals, as well as none other than Vrolok (ex-Aeternus, ex-Gorgoroth) on drums. The latter is not just a name-drop – his influence is clearly audible. The comparisons to the early work of Norwegian Aeternus are unmistakable, both in the way the riffs are constructed and in the dark, atmospheric undercurrent that permeates the compositions.

The result is a tape that will appeal both to fans of raw, uncompromising Black Metal and to listeners more attuned to folkloristic and melancholic sounds. Hulder once again proves her versatility, showing that she can effortlessly move between furious coldness and entrancing warmth.

The title track opens with an acoustic intro before erupting into relentless Black Metal. The Aeternus comparisons that have already been circulating in the media are not unfounded – they are very much present here.

It is then followed by Zonnesteen, which reveals an entirely different side of Hulder: a beautiful, medieval-inspired piece where Marliese showcases her remarkable clean vocals.

Unfortunately, the tape has already sold out, but with any luck we won’t have to wait too long before hearing from Hulder again – perhaps with a new full-length album on the horizon.
