Many years ago, a bucket filled with Gelderland filth was hurled into the world: Wederganger had arrived. The Black Metal band from Gelderland quickly made an impression with their demo and soon signed with Germany’s Ván Records.
What followed was a magnificent debut in 2015, Halfvergaan Ontwaakt — an album that without doubt belongs among the true classics of Dutch Black Metal. But in 2018 the flame went out, and from the ashes arose, among others, Bezwering.
Several releases followed, including two full-length albums, the most recent being Dodenkroning in 2022.
In the meantime, bassist MJWW (ex-Wederganger) has disappeared from the line-up, but Onmens and Alfschijn remain. Since 2023, they have been joined by guitarist MR.
And now there is a new EP: a 7” picture disc in gatefold, released by Haarlem’s Nomad Snakepit, known for releases by Svartsyn, Duivel and Nagel.
Two new tracks that, from the very first listen, speak to me more than their latest album did. The mid-tempo “De Dood in de Ogen” showcases Alfschijn’s voice particularly well — Undeath Metal as we’ve come to know it.
Side B contains “De Roep van de Maan”, a somewhat fiercer track with harsher, rasping screams. I’m not entirely sure who delivers these, but I suspect they are by live vocalist Krem, whom we also know from :Nodfyr: and Gaistaz.
After the somewhat disappointing Dodenkroning, at least in my personal opinion, Dwalingenis is once again a strong release that will certainly find its place in my collection. Sadly, only two tracks — but exactly the way we like to hear them: undeath.
