Review: Greh – Dysphoric Devotion CD

The German band Greh was formed in 2022 and quickly made an impression with Age of Resentment. After building a solid reputation and releasing another EP in 2023, they caught the attention of the German label Fetzner Death Records—a label that, despite only being around for a few years, has already put out a significant number of releases and is making a strong name for itself.

On Dysphoric Devotion, Greh delivers their signature wall of Blackened Death Metal with some Sludge references—heavy bass, crushing guitar layers, and relentless drumming—all combined with dual vocal styles: deep guttural growls on one side and almost Black Metal-like screams on the other.

Greh is the Slavic word for “sin,” and these guys make sure you hear it—it would be a sin not to crank up the volume. There’s no hiding the fact that this album is meant to be played loud.

From the brutal opener Chained Thoughts, you know you won’t find a moment of rest for the next half hour. With a production that leaves little room for subtlety, you’re quite literally beaten over the head with sound. No overproduced guitar noodling here—just a relentless wall of sound that chases you down and is nothing short of impressive.

The almost groovy All Flesh Decays provides a brief moment of respite on the album, as a slightly different approach takes center stage. Growth in Pain then ramps things up again—heavier, more sludge-driven, yet maintaining the same furious intensity as before.

With this debut, Greh makes a strong statement—they’re a band to keep an eye on in the coming years. A must-listen for fans of Blackened Death Metal. The only point of criticism is the album’s length—28 minutes feels quite short.
