Review: Myrkur Skógur – Flittermice ov Hell

From the depths of the Dutch underground scene comes Myrkur Skógur. After having released just a few separate singles it is finally time for the first release, an EP called Flittermice ov hell. This EP brings us an intro track and three musical pieces which I will describe below. But first let’s meet the team behind Myrkur Skógur:

Seander Pietersen (previously performed in F.U.A., Harvest of Kairos and Raiser) does the vocals and guitar. On the other guitar and drum programming is Rens Hilgers (from Degenerate) and last but not least Stefan Terlouw (Yaotzin, Nebelstorm, In Aetherium and ex-Evil Oath) on bass duties. Flittermice ov hell was recorded during December 2024 trough April 2025 and was produced by Rens Hilgers.

While the duration is short (14:33) this EP grabs you by the throat. Starting with a basic intro with some noise, the real music starts with the second track. Clinic door opens with a second wave style riff, thundering blastbeats and a bass guitar that dares to break free every now and then, the experience from Stefan can be heard! The vocals are screaming harshly through the speakers, it fits the music well.

The second track The emperors wrath is more of the same, though executed well. The riffs are a bit simplistic, but have a sense of building tension. The vocals are spot on on this track. Being the longest track on this release the trick is to keep the attention of the listener, something that this band can improve on. Towards the end it feels like it is dragging for too long.

The last track, Echoes on the battlefields starts great, a guitar intro with vocals that sounds like a haunted spirit. After being haunted for a while, the vocals start to get a bit more aggressive and then the blastbeats return. This track is my favorite, evil riffs combined with a great sense of dread. The drums are alternating in a way that really builds the tension, and release thereof well. The bass guitar is a bit more simplistic on this track, really sticking it to the old school style.

For a first release Myrkur Skógur shows potential, there are enough elements in this EP that are great. I am not the only person to hear the potential, Flittermice ov hell will be released through Zwaertgevegt on tape. If they keep this up and keep improving, this will be a force to be reckoned with!

70/100
