Review: Dystlumn – Abstraction CD

Dysylumn is one of those rare bands that sends a shiver down my spine. Their haunting melodies, almost psychotic vocals, and a crushing intensity that lingers long after the music stops. Each track is unmistakably theirs, instantly recognizable yet endlessly intriguing. After several years of silence, they’re back, and on October 17th 2025 they’ll unleash their fourth full-length album, Abstraction’. I, for one, am counting down the days.

In the spirit of their previous album, none of the tracks have specific titles; instead, each serves as a summation of the themes the band wishes to convey. For example their previous album ‘Cosmogonie’’ had three themes: Apparition, Dispersion and Extinction (all with three tracks each called I, II & III). On this album the band kept it to a single subject; Abstraction

This album consists of five tracks, but calling it separate tracks would be an insult. I rarely have the patience to sit through an album from start to finish, most bands’ energy arcs simply don’t align with my own rhythm. Dysylumn, however, sets a masterclass in crafting an atmospheric journey. Listening to Abstraction feels like being swept along on a vast adventure; you’re not just hearing the music. You’re witnessing their dialogue with the cosmos.

The production is crystal clear, with every element distinctly audible. Yet there’s a lingering sense of echo, as if the music is connected to the universe itself. It imparts a feeling of sheer grandeur. Every vocal line is placed with precision, and the music rises and falls with a natural, effortless flow. The lead guitars sound like a voice from the vast beyond, the drums and bass bring everything back to earth. The harshness of the rhythms keeps the listener grounded during this album.

In my view, the album is on the shorter side, around 37 minutes, but a band like Dysylumn knows how to maintain tension so expertly that it almost feels too brief. Given the several years since their previous release, I hope they’ve regained their full momentum, because these guys still have so much further to go!
