Review: Dysangelium – Exxekratus EP

With three new tracks and one that just missed the cut for their 2014 debut, Dysangelium returns from a six-year slumber. And what a return it is—this EP is thickly produced, hinting that even more may be on the horizon.

Sonically, this release leans closer to their debut “Thanatos Askesis” than to its successor, “Death Leading.” Fast yet incredibly tight guitar work, backed by a groovy bass and a punchy drum sound, creates a solid foundation. Meanwhile, vocalist Sektarist 0 delivers his signature screams—not the usual indecipherable shrieks, but clear, raw vocal lines that sound like he’s tearing his lungs out.

Once again, World Terror Committee is behind this release—the same label that brought us Barshasketh’s fantastic album last week. Unfortunately, it’s only available on CD, but this EP truly deserves a vinyl pressing.

From the opening track, “Of The Burning Throne (Manifest I),” the tone is set—high-energy Black Metal with plenty of variation, and a chorus that hits hard. This would be a perfect live opener, with the crowd roaring “Manifest!” along.

Next up is “Trachea,” which keeps the momentum going at full throttle. The hardcore-influenced vocal delivery might make some listeners pause, but here, it fits perfectly.

There was still another Manifest gathering dust on the shelf—“Whispering Knives (Manifest II)”continues the theme. After a brief intro, the track starts off slower, only to slam the gas pedal down soon after.

Finally, the closing track had been waiting 11 years for release. Production-wise, it’s a bit rawer since it was originally intended for the debut. It’s a shame they didn’t fully re-record it, as it would have fit perfectly with the other three tracks—aside from the production differences. Still, it’s a killer track.

With “Exxekratus,” Dysangelium delivers another solid release, setting the stage for what could be an explosive full-length album.
